The hotel is just pure class. The history behind it makes it special as do all the staff, from check in to house keeping and the waiting staff we couldn’t fault it. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be coming back.

It’s an historic property with period features. Beautifully located - peaceful, yet within easy reach of York by bus (Route 11), cab or car (Castle Car Park offers an affordable flat rate evening charge after 6pm). Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Staff are wonderful, without exception. Dinner was served with elan, beautifully prepared and delicious. Breakfasts were comprehensive, appetising and offered loads of choice. Easy parking. The whole place is immaculate. The grounds are a delight and expertly well maintained.

Lots of choices for places to eat, a good stocked Tesco Express for most of everything you need if self-catering. Lots of little quaint shops and so well placed so you can walk to everything York has.

Brilliant, brilliant location right by the City walls and very central. Atmospheric street. Lovely reception staff, very efficient and reassuring. Public car park, leafy and well kept with CCTV for overnight parking, is 1-2 minutes walk away and free midnight to 8am when we were there. Facilities excellent, great shower, well equipped kitchen, quiet despite super view overlooking Goodramgate.

Get up early and go to Matins at 7.30 which ends about 8.00.
Get up early and go to Matins at 7.30 which ends about 8.00. At that time the cathedral is very quiet and you can enjoy it as a place of wonder and worship without the usual busy hubbub that you get later in the day. To go walking along the city wall from Bootham Bar to Goodramgate at sunset, while the bell-ringers practice peal after peal of magical bells, is to step back in time and feel part of history. go around the back streets and find little corners that have not changed since the 1800's with great street names like Oglethorpe! Take afternoon tea or lunch in the lovely garden of Gray's Court Hotel under the city walls behind the Minster... or sit in the garden of the Treasurers house with a take away coffee from the undercroft cafe...
