The hotel was a 15 minute walk to the Old Town and port area - which was lovely and very nice to walk around. There are many shops, restaurants and bars available in the Old Town.
The breakfast buffet was good with warm options (e.g. eggs, bacon, pancakes), small selection of cheese & cold meats, and a variety of breads and baked goods. The double bed was comfortable and definitely large enough for two people. The room was very clean.
The hotel offered safe, if a bit pricey, parking.

La Rochelle is a resort with a maritime feel. Plenty of interesting history which relates back to mediaeval times and La Rochelle's close connection and intertwinement with England during those times. Recommend to start with a guided tour. Our guide John really set the scene and gave us ideas of where to go . The three towers make for a fascinating visit. A trip over to the Isle of Ré where you can hire bikes for a leisurely trip round the island is well worth it. La Rochelle is small enough to find your way round with ease. Bikes and on foot are the general modes of transport. Many pedestrianised areas with cobbled streets, a wonderful harbour, splendid market and a variety of excellent restaurants.

What I liked the most: historical sites, harbour, beach promenades, gorgeous public parks, relaxing atmosphere in the city and shops, very helpful and friendly people, always offered help when I was looking at the map without me asking, enough public toilets, fantastic food even in supermarkets.
What I didn't like: The bus stops of the whole journey are not listed at the bus stops. Only the name of the bus stop itself, the final destanation and a timetable. There is also a map with one million bus routes, but it is a bit confusing. No list of bus stops on buses either, although bus stops are announced. In the Aquarium you can only get an audio guide giving a ticket seller your ID, which will be returned to you only when you return the audio guide. It was the only museum ever in my experience, which needed to keep my ID until I return the audio guide. I wasn't ready to trust a stranger with the only document I had abroad, so I refused. I find such policy quite extreme.

La Rochelle is a beautiful place, great history and architecture and wonderful to wander around. Local food and wine was excellent.
Sadly we had rain a lot of the time so we didn't get to any beaches, and we took the 2 hour boat trip to Fort Boyard, but there wasn't much else to see, so I doubt I would recommend that unless you just want to watch the water for 2 hours. Some upscale shopping in the old town, and some wonderful fresh food and seafood markets.
A superb classical guitarist played in the street by the boats, in the late afternoon.
Altoether a pleasant place to spend a few days.

I'd been to La Rochelle about 20 years ago for work and had little opportunity to do the tourist thing. A beautiful town, excellent market and shops and great dining. Go for it if those things float your boat.
The somewhat outdated mid-range hotel was less than a three-minute walk from the train station. The old port and thus also the city center of La Rochelle was surprisingly close, less than ten minutes' walk away. The hotel is somewhat hidden in concrete architecture. My navigation software thought that the hotel was permanently closed. This was wrong. I pointed this problem out at reception.
Wonderful hotel with beautiful rooms and a lovely quiet courtyard. Location was perfect, and next to Opaline, where we had our best meal on the trip. All of the people at La Champlain were so helpful and friendly. This is definitely where we will stay on our next trip to La Rochelle.
A superb location, great restaurants near by. Excellent welcome from very help staff. Bed very comfortable, Wi-Fi worked well. Breakfast was the best selection we have ever seen in France. Altogether a very pleasant experience.
Location is great, easy walking to the port, the restaurants, and the market in La Rochelle. Bed is very comfortable. Service excellent. Breakfast is the best I've ever had at a restaurant in France.
