Zermatt is a great little town with top notch skiing and snowboarding! Pricy but no more so than major US resorts. It's also easier to get around than many of the major US resorts--there's no driving, parking, futzing around. No matter where you stay you're likely pretty close to a lift or funicular.

If weather is clear the trip to the top of the Gornergrat on the train is a great way to start a ski holiday, enjoying the scenery and the experience of being surrounded by big mountains. Huge variety of skiing to enjoy in Zermatt and exceptional mountain restaurants; expensive for UK travellers but very high standards of food and service. A day out in Valtournenche/Cervinia opens up some easier skiing and some good Italian food options.

The town is picturesque, easy to get around, has great choices for dining and shopping. We had some great meals--lots of schnitzel (great for kids). Our favorite restaurants were: Whymper Stube (very Swiss with schnitzel and fondue); Chez Gaby (cozy restaurant that specializes in grilled meats) and Zermama (excellent veal schnitzel and potato salad in a modern but very cozy atmosphere). As for getting around, the town is very walkable, but the E-taxis (no cars allowed) are always available. The children enjoyed the skiing, the indoor pool and checking out all the gift shops and especially the chocolate stores. They also got to watch some curling and ice hockey games.

Zermatt is unbeatable for combination of Switzerland and Alpine. The nature speaks for itself it's just breathtakingly gorgeous. Hidden gems here and there. Everything is excellently maintained and it's a cute little town with everything from delicious food to shopping. I did three days - it was prefect length for me. For hikers, recommend getting a pass for the full duration of the stay which gives you access to the whole mountain region (including the Gornergrat train) instead of paying separate rides. Recommend to visit the Matterhorn Museum - it's well worth it. Zermatt is super accessible for getting around anywhere - and to and from other Swiss cities. They have the cutest valais blacknose sheep and wildlife for those love nature and photography.

Zermatt is a perfect base to discover Swiss Alps.
Zermatt is a perfect base to discover Swiss Alps. Plenty of cable car routes and ski lifts around, as well as nice walking routes. And Matterhorn of course, we couldn't stop observing it all the time from different points and angles.
Very easy to get around on foot, there are also electric riding taxis (which seemed to be not necessary at all for us, but if you come with a lot of luggage and kids I guess they would be really helpful).
The food choice in the local cafes and restaurants seemed disappointing though, quality was good but all the places served the same dishes, were overpriced and felt very touristic. Very challenging if you are a vegetarian and don't feel like eating cheese all the time. Can't even guess what vegans could eat there. Fortunately, there are few supermarkets.
The place that stood out was The North Wall bar, they only had pizza and salads (plus few starters, dessert and nice beers), but they tasted extremely good and fresh and were definitely made and served with love and care. The place also had great cozy and friendly atmosphere, so much better than in the crowded touristic places.

It is the best hotel experience we had in Switzerland, we have our own view to Matterhorn mountain from the balcony and there is a sauna in basement level which ease our tiredness from hiking around the area.
Also, the hotel breakfast is so rich, wide variety of cheeses, hams and fresh made juicy.
Highly recommended to spend a couple nights here when you in Zermatt
The free breakfast has a lot of healthy variety, the best in all Switzerland that I stayed. The room and bathroom is clean. The staff allowed us to leave our baggage before check in time. The staffs are helpful and polite. The bus stop is around 5-minute walking distance. Zermatt should not be missed in your Switzerland trip! Highly recommended canton!
In my opinion, the hotel is locatel in the best zone of Zermatt: far away from the most touristic streets in a very calm area, walking distance train station and main lift. The breakfast is delicious and the spa is amazing (fully renovated, clean, new and great views to the Matterhorn). Front-desk people were very kind and helpful.
Stay at 3100 Kulm Hotel Gornergrat was like being in the heaven. The best place to visit at Switzerland. Must spend a night to enjoy Sunset and sunrise. It is a lifetime achievement
