The King Alfred Pub, hotel in Winchester

In the leafy area of Hyde in Winchester, this charming traditional English pub now offers brand new, high-standard 4-star guest accommodations in a great location.

LOVE this place. The pub is positively quaint, good food (a pint and a pie; how better to arrive in England?), very friendly staff, and tucked away in a residential neighborhood. I'd never have guessed there were rooms here, but boy was mine nice! Very surprising! Beautifully appointed, super comfortable bed with a variety of pillows to choose from, breakfast IN the room, ready for you. I rate any place that has real coffee as top; I had a coffee press (not Nescafe), plus tea, and shortbreads, and a HEALTHY breakfast (sorry, no heavy English one here). Plus two fans (though I didn't need them). Really well done, with all the quaintness of a historically old building (plumbing, stuck windows, fluctuating water temps.) but this isn't my first time around the English block. I expect those things now and accept them as business as usual. Highly recommend this if you're in Winchester.

The Westgate, hotel in Winchester

Set in Winchester, within 1640 feet of Winchester Cathedral and 2625 feet of Wolvesey Castle, The Westgate offers a bar. Free WiFi is available throughout.

The staff were friendly and accommodated my every request. The bed was very comfortable. The view from the window was pleasing. The location for walking on High St was perfect. We only ate breakfast at the pub on the first floor and it was very good. Dogs were allowed in the pub which I think is great. It is an older building, a Pub Inn, which fits in with historic old England. Because of its age It has no elevator, but that did not bother me and I'm 80 years old. Yes I would come again.

So many things, and it was little touches also, like a slow close toilet seat, divider in the bin for general and recycling, a massive tv and a beautiful tub, I'm only sorry we didn't get to enjoy it for that long as we had quite a late arrival and we were heading to an activity early the next day but we had dinner and breakfast there and it was gorgeous.

A very lively Inn with rooms. The pub started serving food early to a lot of Saturday night regulars which made for an entertaining place to eat. The service was attentive and the food delicious.

We particularly enjoyed the combination of busy historic inn/restaurant with boutique hotel rooms in a central location opposite the cathedral. The vibe was informal and relaxed but, at the same time, busy. The room was spacious, comfortable, and very quiet. Staff were friendly and enthusiastic.

The location couldn't be more central and the breakfast was great. The room was very large with great attention to details. The restaurant and tavern were two of the best in Winchester and the entire place was very historic. Plus, the staff were all in their twenties and very friendly and helpful. The Old Vine Inn is really "the place" to stay in Winchester.

Location near to town excellent, only a short walk into the centre. Very friendly staff. Brilliant bar with excellent selection of drinks. Room had an excellent shower. Very clean room. Great touch was the fridge on the wall with water and a bottle of beer each day (had to swirtch it off at night though as it made gurgling sounds)! Nice breakfasts. Historic inn with fabulous memorabilia.

Love the oldie rustic feel to it. The beds were comfortable and clean. Bathroom was spacious and the cheeky breakfast muffin kept us full till lunch. Location was perfect for us to get around and we did have a meal in the pub which was handy option when you are to tired to go out for dinner.
