Watch the sunset from Mauna Loa and explore the sinuous networks of lava tubes and caves that run for miles underneath the surface of the island. Kalapana Seaview Estates subdivision in the southeast district of Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii. Just minutes away from the black sand beach, Kehena, there are smoothie and fruit vendors that pop up on sunny days. Hikes along stark, black lava rock coast lines and lowland rainforests make this area unique. Many agricultural endeavors also go on in the area, worth exploring, including spear and reel fishing. Ecstatic Dancing is a popular happening in the area, as well as a variety of festivals. Visit punarising (dot) com for some direction on local things to do like a chocolate or mushroom farm tours! It is recommended that you rent a car at the airport in Hilo, though there is a bus that swings by at the front of the neighborhood. A bike is also a very pleasant way to travel... the red road, or highway 130, is no longer red but is a beautiful road to bike along. The roads are somewhat narrow and winding around the area.
