Arles Historical Homestead is a 141 year old home built in the Edwardian style. We have a completely separate 2 bedroom unit on the grounds available to rent. The unit is about 75 sq meters in size . We are about 5 klm from the main street of Whanganui. You are able to walk around our beautiful heritage gardens ....they surround our homestead and have been developed over a hundred years. On site is a famous Queensland Kauri tree that is 23 feet around....they say it is possibly the southern most of its type in the world. The homestead was originally on 900 acres and was built to be a self contained farm community with tennis courts ...polo grounds...ballroom and was well known for its garden parties. The homestead and gardens have been brought back to lovely original condition. Things to do. within 10 minutes from the house...... Jet boating up the Whanganui River to the bridge To Nowhere. Catch the Waimarie paddle steamer and cruise up the river . Visit heritage Whanganui town .....voted NZ most beautiful heritage town. Visit Virginia Lake and NZ most famous little Winter Garden. Visit the Durie Hill Elevator and Tower . The famous Glass Works where you can watch artisans ..
Myself and my wife have spent the last few years restoring the house and gardens to its original immaculate condition,. We have a passion for old homes and think they should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. These heritage properties need to be lived in and brought back to life by families who love them . .These old homesteads have such great history. When you live in them they feel alive with their groans and quirks......i think they are talking to you.
Being only 5 klm from the main street of Whanganui but being in the country is a great asset. You can go river up the Whanganui River in canoes...paddle steamer ....jet boats. You can visit Bushy House for High Tea or lunch and walk through a hundred acres of lovely native bush ...predator free. Visit the glass works and watch artisans blow glass shapes. Catch a coffee up at Virginia Lake and then pop next door to our famous Winter Garden. Look at our lovely Heritage buildings in town and then visit one of our many antique shops. Or you can visit Sargeant Gallery at 38 Taupo Quay ansd check out what is on currant display . There are many other galleries in town to check out as well. We have a great museum with the largest collection of Gottfried Lindauer paintings in the world. After all this you can relax on your deck in our unit and have a wine or beer and enjoy the setting sun...
