Nhoma Safari Camp is a small, activity orientated, tented camp, situated in the north eastern corner of Namibia. We are located 80 km from Tsumkwe, on the gateway between Etosha and Okavango Delta on communal land of the Ju|’hoan San or Bushmen (as they are commonly known in Namibia). What makes Nhoma Safari Camp unique is it location just next to the authentic local village of Nhoma, home of the Ju|'hoansi San Bushmen. The Ju|'hoan San, like other recent hunter-gatherer communities, are the only analog we have for understanding how human kind organised themselves before the agricultural revolution. The activities at the camp are centred around the Bushmen culture and ranges from hunting and tracking wild animals, veld food gathering, the making of hunting equipment to traditional games and the healing dance. Our fully inclusive rate includes a full day interactive program with the local community accompanied by a guide/translator. Activities can be booked on site also, but please reserve in advance.
Flora and Moritz took over Nhoma Safari Camp in 2019. Flora has been working with the community since 2015, on a sandal making project, reviving the ancient craft of the local's hunting sandal. The project is running up to day and you can visit it while your here. Moritz is a Namibian born in Windhoek, who worked several years in the tourism industry, as a safari guide and on lodges as a sustainability and permaculture consultant. As a couple, they unite their skills to collaborate with the Nhoma community in ecotourism and move to the site permanently with their family.
When traveling from Namibia's Etosha Park to Botswana's Okavango Delta, or the other way, the C44 is the direct gateway between these two highlights, cutting time short. SAN PEOPLE Our area is called among Namibians "Bushmanland", the last remaining habitat where San people reside and are allowed to hunt and gather traditionally still off the land. 200m away from the camp is the local village of Nhoma. We recommend to learn from the first inhabitants themselves, and let the San people guide you and tell you about their history, way of life, how they live off the land and the tracks of the wildlife. Our "All Inclusive" rate includes a full day experience with the local community, accompanied by a guide: Morning-Lunch: The San hunt/walk: a guided walk through the wild bush, pointing out useful plants, medicine, bushfood, tracks; potentially resulting in hunting for smaller animals such as porcupine, springhare, small antilopes, .... or looking for bush honey! Afternoon: Tool- or craft making, traditional games and lores; experience the daily village vibe (NOT a living museum), getting to know the chief and his extended family. Looking at the big variety of crafts for sale as potential souvenir. Evening: Healing trance dance, a powerful spiritual ceremony still practiced among the community to call upon the help of ancestors to heal sickness. KHAUDUM NATIONAL PARK When staying at Nhoma Safari Camp, a visit to the unspoiled Khaudum National Park is very recommended. The landscape around Nhoma and Khaudum is beautifully wild, unfenced and although sandy soil, very green and dotted with high trees such as Zambezi teak, Mangetti, False Mopane, Wild Serenga, Kiaat,... We can organise a guide day tour or give recommendations how to drive on your own. NYAE NYAE PANS Another highlight are the Nyae Nyae pans in the South of the region, where also many ancient Baobab trees are found. We can organise a guide day tour or give recommendations how to drive on your own.
