Even though its 250km from Colombo if you plan a long weekend the trinco beaches are the most beautiful amazing snorkeling and swimming!
Can be a bit pricey during season but during the latter part of the season you can find some reasonable places to stay and with some googling good places to eat.

A nice costal city with mixed culture. There are a lot places you can visit including religious and colonial-era attractions. Beaches around the city are some of the best beaches you can find in the world. The city is located around the world's largest natural harbor.

The property is in a good location. The surrounding areas are very nice.
The staff behaviour was somewhat similar to un-accommodating . Trying to be polite but no for every request.
The food spread for dinner buffet was very limited and also not so tasty. Not worth the money.
Overall not worth the money spent, though they said it was peak season but not seen the Hotel booked to the capacity. The prices were exorbitantly high.

Great beaches, we were well to the North end and it was a bit more developed with tourist facilities. The rest, including Dutch Bay were much less developed. Friendly people, high quality food (with prices to match but we got great food so were fine with it).

If you want to have a good time, you should definitely book this place.
The cabanas are very basic, but if you are not looking for luxery, is has everything you need.
Lalith is an amazing (and funny) host, who makes you feel at home and takes care of you.
The beach is a 1-2min walk and there are plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood where you can have Sri Lankan or more Western food.
Lalith took us on a whale watching tour on his boat, which was really great.
Definitely go to Nilaveli beach, 15min by tuktuk.
Amazing location, right on the beach. Snack bar Hawaii on site did good food, amazing Piña Coladas, staff were friendly. (We arrived from Jaffna and were a bit shocked at the prices here, but they are normal in Uppuveli, and still cheap by Western standards) On-site dive shop was also good with friendly staff. A good base to visit Trincomalee and Nilaveli. Wine shop and green grocers not too far away if you want to save a buck by buying fruit and beer. Nice little terrace out front of the room
Lovely hotel!! We stayed here for 4 days, it was perfect! The pool was a great addition, nice to have that option as well as the beach so close. The staff here were really lovely and accommodating.
We’ve been in Sri Lanka for 4 weeks and this was one of the nicest rooms we stayed in for this price.
We also highly recommend the restaurant ARANYAM down the road - lovely local place only 3 mins away.
The couple who own the hotel are so lovely, and it was clear they sincerely cared about their patrons' comfort and safety. They were so accommodating and always willing to have a chat.
Breakfast was included in our stay, and it was a delicious mixture of traditional Sri Lankan breakfast foods and western food. The beach is a very short walk from the hotel, and it is in a quiet area.
The hotel is located conveniently close to the beach. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. The beds are comfortable, the room is spacious and every room has its own AC. We had a memorable stay and definitely will stay again.
