Stay in a true Irish mud walled thatched cottage. This Thatched cottage is older that the United States of America as a country and is even older that the foundation of the Irish state, going back to pre-famine times. The cottage is estimated to be built in the 1600s during which time the first settlers first landed in the Americas in Jamestown. The walls are made entirely of mud, and the roof is restored and re thatched by the owner who is a traditional Irish straw thatcher himself. The house had been restored to maintain the original beauty to capture architecture from various centuries. With modern comforts of central heating, we have maintained the feel of how we lived years ago with the houses old original kettle, iron, fire place crane, farm plough and many other tools used from past centuries. Sit by the old fire place and get a photo, or see a section of the original exposed mud wall. One interesting thing about the home is that it benefits from ''natural air conditioning'' because of the natural cooling effect of the mud walls connection to the ground, so it naturally lowers the temperature in the original side of the home only when the central heat is left off.

The owner, John, is a fourth generation traditional straw thatcher who learned the art from his father, passed on by his grandfather, and again by his great grandfather. John has saved this house from disrepair and restored it many years ago and lives next door to the cottage in a separate house. John himself thatched the house and is happy to answer any questions you may have on thatching or the history of the house. John also knows where the best song and craic is at the local pub and is happy to introduce you to the locals in an old style genuine Irish pub only 4km away. John can offer private one day thatching experience where you can learn the art of thatching on site for a small fee for his time.

Askinrath is a small lane 1km outside of the village of Suncroft that has a local shop and a choice of two pubs / bars. You will be only 8 to 10km away from two major shopping towns of ancient Kildare town, and Newbridge. Kildare is one of the oldest towns in Ireland with the famous St Brigid's Cathedral, with a 12th century stone round tower built to defend against Viking invasions, which is also the second highest in Ireland. The famous Japanese gardens and National stud, and the renowned Kildare village shopping village and its swizz design, and a host of restaurants and pubs nearby. Newbridge has the large Whitewater shopping centre, and plenty of shop fronts. You are also not far from walking trails such as emo, or Monstreven woods. Lullymore heritage Discovery Park 19km. Glendalough, Blessington lakes, and many other famous beautiful attractions are only 45 min away by car where you will find a host of beautiful scenery, camping sites and trails. You are only 7km or 10 min away from the main motorway exit that takes you directly to Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Belfast, and 15 min away from main motorway exit that will take you to Waterford and Wexford.
