Influential authors Maria Edgeworth and William Turner were both born in Black Bourton, a tiny mediaeval town in Oxfordshire. The St. Mary the Virgin Church in Black Bourton, which houses magnificent wall murals from the 13th century that were painstakingly unearthed in 1932, offers a great gastropub. The West Oxfordshire Arts Gallery is only one of the numerous sites of interest in the surrounding village of Bampton, which serves as one of the main filming locations for Downton Abbey. Oxford is only 21 miles away, and Burford, the "gateway" to the Cotswolds, is conveniently located. a great starting point for exploring this stunning area.
