Troyes is essentially a 16th century city. From the "Beautiful 16th century", as we like to say here. The current form of the city of Troyes, both architecturally and urbanistically, dates from this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The commune is now divided into five cantons of which it is the capital. It is located in chalky Champagne on the Seine side. With a population approximately of 65000 habitants, the city of Troyes is the seventh most populated municipality in the region. It extends over about fifteen kilometers along the Seine valley. Its historical past, from the Tricasses tribe to the liberation of the city on August 25, 1944 during the Second World War, including the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields, the Council of Troyes, the marriage of Henri V and Catherine de France and the fairs of Champagne as well as its rich architectural and urban heritage with its many buildings protected as historical monuments, have enabled Troyes to be designated City of Art and History by the National Committee of Cities and Countries of art and history. Textile, developed from the 18th century, was one of the historic strengths of the Trojan economy until the 1960s; Troyes is today the European capital of factory outlets and merchants thanks to its three brand centers. The "Barséquanais" with its expanses of champagne vineyards has many gastronomic assets.
