Poblenou is a hip Barcelona neighborhood with a great mix of locals, ex-pats, artists, startup businesses, and travelers (without being overly touristic). The area is a mix of old and new, a clear example around La Rambla del Poblenou. You will spend time with the locals and get to see the every-day-life of a residential neighborhood. This, however, does not mean that you have to be fluent in Spanish or Catalan. The beach is a short walk away from the apartment and is a fantastic place to hang out (not so crowded).
