David Sullivan, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, studied English literature at Dalhousie University and the University of Toronto and is the author of five books of New Brunswick history. Beth Campbell, a native of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, with degrees in Nursing and English Literature, is a nurse with Community Mental Health.

We offer 24 Housekeeping units in downtown St. Andrews, New Brunswick. These consist mainly of apartment units in houses, and there are four cabins. All are self-contained, with their own entrances, kitchens and bathrooms, are equipped for basic daily living, with dishes, cutlery, bedding and towels supplied as a matter of course. We have 200 feet of waterfront footage spanned by a large boardwalk and backed by a large open yard. The grounds occupy two-thirds of an acre stretching from Water Street to the waterfront, on which are nine buildings. Not everything has a water view, but nothing is far away. The yard comes equipped with a number of picnic tables and charcoal barbecues scattered throughout for general use, and some units have their own. There is a supermarket just a few blocks toward town centre on Water Street, a five minute walk from the property. The Town Wharf, out of which the various whale-watching companies operate, is also just a few minutes by foot.

St. Andrews was founded by United Empire Loyalists after the end of the American Revolutionary War. The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Native Americans used the site largely for ceremonial purposes before that, and later shared the area with French traders. The town was chosen by the first British settlers in 1783 partly for its proximity to shipping lanes on the Atlantic coast, and partly because of its scenic location. The early economic history of the town centered largely on the triangle trades with Britain and the West Indies, but after the timber trade died out in the middle part of the 19th century, the town fell on hard times. It was partially relieved of economic distress in the 1880s with the advent of tourism from the New England states entering the Passamaquoddy Bay first on Campobello Island and later in St. Andrews itself. The tourist trade was bumped up further in 1888 with the arrival of the St. Andrews Land Company, formed largely of American investors in the railway and hotel business in and around Boston and New York. The Land Company built the Algonquin Hotel and golf course, and shortly later, saw the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway and its gentry.
