Great location! It's the perfect spot for a totally isolated getaway! The rooms were tidy, with heaters and electric blankets for those cold october nights. The animals were also really friendly. We got to make friends with the giant bullock...

Well presented, the messroom was a great way to converse with the other guest. Well positioned to travel to the Gordon Dam region and tourist activities. The platypuses were on display around dusk. Thank you, Cally

Company information

My husband Richard & I enjoy sharing this special property with its special tranquillity & serenity. We grew up in Queensland on the land - Cally on a 7,000 acre sheep property on the western Darling Downs that was very FLAT & Richard with 40,000 chickens. Richard was an Engineering Surveyor. Cally ran a successful catering business, deli & student accommodation in Brisbane & worked in employment, telecommunications & finance.

Property information

We fell in love with the wonderful sandstone homestead convict built around 1828 Rathmore House, cocooned in the tranquil Central Highland hills in the stunning Derwent Valley. Just one hour from Hobart it feels like it is "almost off the edge of the world". Almost derelict outbuildings were revived for our large family of six children & their partners & our six grandchildren to visit. Being so comfortable & exuding country rustic chic, we decided they were too nice not to share. Having been owned by one family for 150 years & never open to the public, we opened in 2017. Rathmore residents currently include 4 ducks - Jemina, Jackie, Jerry & Jelly & 2 calves - Henry & Hercules. You are welcome to help with the feeding.

Neighbourhood information

Guests are welcome to walk around Rathmore's 37 hectares (92acres) Ask about location of boundary fences. Dew Rivulet lake is fenced; please check gates are closed if you have children. Do not allow othem to go there unaccompanied by an adult. On a still day you may see platypus play as well as ducks & swans. Take the "Platypus Punt" on the Dew Rivulet. You are welcome to walk amongst the sheep & lambs & visit the Heritage listed Shearing Shed. You may be lucky to visit while there is sheep shearing or crutching so please check with us on this. Mt Field National Park & the stunning Russell Falls & Horsehoe Falls are a short drive & well worth visiting. Bothwell & Hamilton are interesting historic towns. Hamilton has great Coffee shops including Wild Fennel Cafe, Jackson's Emporium & Glen Clyde House cafe & Gallery . Ratho Farm Bothwell for Golf & Trout Fishing...ask Cally about booking this. Nant Whisky Distillery & Nant Mill tours are available Wed to Sunday 11am, 1.30 & 3pm. Nant has beautiful grounds and a cafe open 10am to 4pm. Prospect Villa Garden in Hamilton is one & a half acres of romantic colour blended gardens, abundantly planted.
