The market town of Rum is located on the southern slope of the Nordkette. It includes the village of Rum with its Gothic parish church, Neu-Rum with its shopping centers, industrial and commercial enterprises, and Hoch-Rum, a residential area with a private clinic run by the Sisters of the Cross. The western end of the municipality borders directly on Innsbruck: the center of Innsbruck (provincial capital) and Hall (in Tyrol) are both only 5 kilometers from Rum and can be easily reached by public transportation. Rum is located at the foot of the Karwendel Alpine Park, the largest nature park in Austria. Numerous well-marked hiking trails lead you through this natural reserve. Also popular is the geology trail Nordkette: 5 stations tell about coral reefs and lagoons at 2,300 metres above sea level, where today one of the steepest ski routes in Europe is located at the Hafelekar. On the valley floor, on the other hand, is the famous Innradweg Tiroler Unterland and the Rum climbing hall with bouldering wall. In winter, the village is surrounded by ski resorts.
