We loved the location as we'd both arrived in India from very busy lives and the calm and rural outlook at this time of year was simply stunning.
From the balcony outside our room we experienced mongooses playing, squirrels and a woodpecker (?) in the coconut palms, fishing boat lights out to sea, and the call to prayer from the mosque at the bottom of the hill beside the beach.
The facilities were basic and not the cleanest, but the bedding was clean and the shower good which is all that is required.
There is a restaurant beside the guesthouse with an extensive menu, but being off season not everything was available. We had freshly squeezed fruit juices, and ate elsewhere.
Once you get your bearings, it is an easy and safe walk both day and night up the dirt road to a main road with many food options. We also discovered the main tourist beach with many options and also lots of hawkers.
This place is very definitely for people who are physically able, as getting to it involves some walking on uneven terrain and up/down a hill depending on which direction you come from.
The offer to contact the caretaker was made in advance and we didn't take advantage of that until our taxi driver refused to travel any further - I recommend calling first! We would have gone to the entrance mosque side instead of the Google maps suggestion.

Loved the stay in Santa Maria Kovalam. Not only it's value for money but also such lovely hosts and perfect location from beach. Any one travelling around it's worthy to stay here. Beach just a few steps. Host Siraj was a wonderful friend. And mind-blowing art works are going on for the property by Appu.
Shida was a lovely hostess - communication was excellent, and she was very helpful - We enjoyed some interesting conversations. Shida told us about local events , such as the festival in the nearby temple. She helped us and other guests with travel arrangements. Her staff were also kind and helpful. The location was good - slightly away from the busy seafront which I liked. We felt very safe and that our room was secure. It was a relaxing and happy stay.
Charles is a great host. Very welcoming, makes delicious breakfast and is always ready to give good advice. I loved my stay there, away from the noise.
