Our stay at Blue Thistle Cottages was absolutely perfect – a true highlight of accommodations for our New Zealand journey. From the moment we arrived, the peaceful, picturesque setting and warm hospitality made us feel right at home.
The cottage itself was immaculate, spacious, and equipped with everything we could need. The kitchenette was thoughtfully stocked with all the essentials, and the bed was incredibly comfortable for a restful night's sleep. The bathroom was modern, with a powerful shower and lovely touches like bathrobes and a towel warmer. The outdoor space was private, with a charming garden, BBQ area, and breathtaking mountain views that made every moment spent there a delight.
The hosts, Maggie and Ian, were exceptionally kind and welcoming, offering great local advice, including tips on where to dine and helpful information about nearby attractions. The setting, just outside of town, was quiet and tranquil but still close enough for an easy drive into Te Anau for meals or shopping. The location was perfect for our Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound tours. The beautiful greenery, colorful flowers, and sweet tui birds made it feel like a paradise. We also loved the beautiful sunsets that could be viewed right from the cottage.
Overall, Blue Thistle Cottages exceeded our expectations in every way. It’s a fantastic value, providing a cozy, clean, and comfortable retreat in an idyllic setting. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!

If you are going to Doubtful Sound... THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE!! You will be sleeping before the rest of the boat tour is 1/2 way back to their hotel!
This place is middle of Alpaca Farm, unit/building is a very private but a part of a larger barn/storage structure. Unit was large and immaculate. There is fridge cooktop microwave pots pans dishwasher plates silverware. Also, a Washer and Dryer which we found EXTREEMLY handy for middle of out 3-week NZ trip. Bed was very nice and we slept perfectly for our 3-night stay.
There is a Jacuzzi 10 steps from the unit that was wonderful to use at night. We followed the owners written instructions to turn the water temp up and down before and after use. This practice will save owners monies hence, save you(who is reading this) keeping the rental rate down, Be mindful of Jacuzzis are expensive to run and upkeep. It is FANTASTIC owner have this enjoyable feature!
I had great correspondence with the owner through Booking,com prior to our visit. However, owner was out of town the days we were there. There is a Lady(I do not recall her name) that tended to the Alpaca Farm while they were away. This Lady gave us tour of farm where you could pet and feed Alpacas. I can not say enough about the hospitality this lady gave us during our stay. She provided WONDERFULL tips about Doubtful, Milford sounds as well as great information about our travels to Wanaka and Mt Cook. She was such a delight to speak with she represents the owners wonderfully as a host!
Owner recycles/filters rain water which was amazing. Water tastes like "nothing" simply the way water should taste, refreshing and cold right from tap. Far cry from any city water or well water. We filled all our water bottles before we left.
DO NOT MISS THIS EXPERIENCE!! It is stay and hospitality, we will forever remember on our NZ visit!

Amazing location - great property. We had 3 families renting properties side by side. It was a perfect 6 nights over the Christmas period. There was only a rugby field and cricket pitch between us and the lake, and a short walk to town. Lake views were awesome. A beautiful family holiday, thanks very much!

Location is great - across the road from Lake Te Anau and close to centre of town. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Rooms we very clean, welcoming, warm and have everything we needed.
Everything was above expectations from the time we arrived beautifully presented unit was very clean, with plenty of space, and comfortable beds. We have been doing our Winter Photography Trips for just 30 years and this stay surpasses all other stays with excellent Hosts Mel & Mark who helped us with where to go, and what the conditions were like on Milford Road which was very much appreciated being Southlanders what else would you expect? Each day arriving back the unit was fully serviced and spotless a very memorable stay. 10/10
Amazing style in the villa, showers were large and great water pressure room was warm in peak winter and very clean.
Restaurant was a highlight! Dinner and drinks were superb!
Very clean, a lot of facilities like a big kitchen, a lot of showers, a free sauna, a hot tube for 30$ an hour only, there was a really cute cat, the receptionist was so welcoming, there was a room for watching tv and play board games.
The room was very clean. The size is great, too. It's not too big , not too small. Since it's winter, netflix and disney Plus were very great for family entertainment at night.
Outstanding value for money. Great sized units, very clean. We’ll definitely be back for more stays. Highly recommend to other travellers. Huge thanks to hosts Ray & Minee for making our stay so enjoyable
