We stayed in a lot of great places during our trip to Japan, but this was my favorite. The house was beautiful and atmospheric, like something out of a dream. The host was friendly and helpful. We met him at his restaurant down the block and he showed us to the property and recommended a nearby hot spring. The house is located in the Hongu area, a ten or fifteen minute walk from the bus stop that will take you to the shrines and Kumano Kodo.

This is such a unique property that it begs a narrative and not just numerical ratings. First of all, the location is key because the hike from our previous location was so far. It was much more pleasant to break it up and arrive at Kumano Hongu Taisha early, have lunch, and arrive at Yumomine hot springs early before everyone else showed up. I'm not sure how everyone else is doing their mapping, but the trail goes north near this place before dropping south to Hongu Taisha. The place is located in a small village, and the property seems to have been a business next to the river. It's super quiet and the view of the river and mountain behind it is lovely. It's a super safe small town and the door is left open. The host is lovely, and speaks pretty good English. He stopped by in the evening to check in with us. The place is quiet and clean, has beautiful views, but sparsely decorated. My GF says "it needs a woman's touch" ;).
There's a grocery store nearby, though the meals provided by the host were outstanding. Breakfast and lunch gets delivered between 6 and 7 AM.

All details of this beautiful place have been lovingly thought of by the owner, Shino. Comfortable and cozy living and sleeping spaces. It has an ofuru (bath tub) to relax from and wash off the day’s exhaustion from walking the Kumano Kodo. The guesthouse is located on a small hill overlooking rice fields and mountain ranges, which is perfect for a quiet and serene evening of rest. We also availed of meals and packed lunch that were simply exquisite, and were prepared by Shino. All in, it was a restful, relaxing, and lovely stay.

We had a whole house to ourselves. A lot of space and nicely furnished rooms for a very friendly price.
The location was easily accessible by public transport. We had not trouble walking to supermarkets or restaurants after coming back from a day exploring the countryside.
Great for families or large parties, vacation homes are privately owned accommodations, available for long or short-term rental. These homes are furnished and equipped with kitchen facilities, though breakfast might be offered as an add-on. These properties have their own independent front door, which makes them different than apartments.
Over 60 countries more than 300 cities i can say this is one of the top three hostels i've ever stayed.
- everything is well organized
- very clean
- comfortable sleeping capsul (not a regular bunk)
- a spacious kitchen with everything you need
- nice and helpful staff
- good facilities with reasonable prices
- plus three onsens for relaxing
Very convenient. Had everything you needed. Washing and dryer. Loved the private onsens. Indoor and out door. Private bunks felt very private. Stairs and not a ladder for the top bunk. Get the bento box for dinner as there isn’t food options in the town. Very clean and organised.
Well located next to the hiking trail. We arrived late after sunset and left early, so can’t say much. The rooms were very clean, the showers are private onsen which was nice. They provide some basic dinner and porridge for breakfast which was very kind.
We had an amazing time. The hotel has 5 rooms (if I remember well!), all facing the river. The view is stunning! You can leave the hotel, cross the road, and have a hot bath in the river onsen. The room was clean and there was hot tea waiting for us. Bathrooms are shared but very clean. There are two onsens inside where you can shower before having a hot bath. Dinner and breakfast were excellent and abundant. I would 100% stay here again, in fact I hope I will!
Very nice place. Close to the public onsen and bus station. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms are traditionally decorated and very clean which I really liked. The private onsen are also a highlight! Highly recommended.
Great location and nice friendly and helpful staff. Bus stop outside. Lovely river with thermal pools just across the road. Peaceful. 2 very clean private onsens inside property included in price. Great restaurant 100m down the road.(Ate there 3 nights in a row. )
Excellent Japanese stile hostel in a very picturesque village, with very modern and really big beds and bedrooms, and very clean. Great common areas. Big kitchen with all the facilities. Outstanding onsen. Excellent staff always ready to help. Highly recommended.
