Idyllic setting right near the sea front. We were lucky enough to get a room with a view and although the weather wasn't in a good mood, ours were not quashed.
The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Simply left alone to our own devices with easy access to the building and to the room.
The room itself was clean and provided plenty of space. TV provided with a good selection of channels including radio stations. The bathroom was very well kept and the shower cubicle was a good size, plus with an ample supply of hot water.
The bed was definitely large enough for us both and the room was cosy and warm.
Breakfast was delightful with an array of choices available, which set us up for the day ahead.

I booked last minute when arriving at Exeter Airport and the process was quick and efficient. Nice and cozy place. Loved my room and the facilities. Everything I needed for a comfortable night as my flight was the following day. A very short walk from the airport to the address. Friendly host. The Fair Oak House comes highly recommended, and I am sure to book again when flying from Exeter.

Very nice hotel and welcoming friendly staff. Shame there's no full English breakfast available. Town centre very close and plenty of on street parking.
Warm and welcoming guest houses are ideal for travellers who prefer unfussy accommodation with a personal touch. They are usually family-run, and your host will provide local recommendations and optional meals. Often cheaper than regular hotels, guest houses can also feature a cosy living room and a garden.
A great location, a short distance away from Sidmouth town centre. Very quiet during the evening and night. The room was larger than we anticipated which was a lovely surprise. Tea, coffe and chocolate facilities provided and a small fridge in the room. Wine glasses available just outside the room. There was free WI-fi which worked perfectly. Liz was an excellent host and we had the best cooked breakfast that we have had for many years, with quality produce. Absolutely delicious. Loved the stay and would recommend without doubt.
Everything about this guest house was exceptional. The rooms were spotlessly clean. They had superb facilities and were decorated beautifully. Andy and Sarah were great hosts who had many tips about where to go, best places to eat, parking, and many more useful tips. The breakfast was also beautifully cooked and was always delivered with a happy and warm greeting. The property is about a 10 minute walk to the seafront, has great parking and is close to the lovely Byes park.

Excellent hotel in great location with great hosts. Rooms comfortable and good sized bathrooms. Food at the hotel at both dinner and breakfast was really good using good quality ingredients. An impressive buffet spread at breakfast. We were made very welcome by Stephen and Sarah and they are first class hosts, making sure that we had everything that we needed. A place to return to.
I think if I drew up a description of a perfectly run English guest house, Canterbury House would tick every box. The room was clean, comfortable and warm (we were there in March). Our hosts were charming, helpful without being pushy and provided the best breakfast I've ever had.
I'm torn between giving the highest possible recommendation and wanting to downplay the excellence in case too many people read this. What if they're full next time I try to book...
Easy unfussy arrival and property takeover. Owners left us to it and very quiet, relaxed start to a lovely break away.
Property has everything needed and was spotlessly clean. We were upgraded for free the larger Cottage The Shippen.
Our Dogs had a ball playing in the meadow, the private Garden and were free.
