We had a wonderful stay at Madikwe River Lodge and would highly recommend it.
Our stay came all game drives included, and Charles was an expert ranger - he knew the reserve and the animals so well that we saw the Big 5 within two days and he had so much insight to share about everything we saw - the best of any safari experience we've done before. The eastern part of the reserve, where the River Lodge is, was incredible for viewings, including right outside the lodge. Make sure to enter the reserve via the Molatedi gate for extra game viewing time.
The lodge itself was lovely, with two swimming pools, spacious bedrooms with outdoor decks, and such friendly and welcoming service. We were fed at every opportunity (including coffee and cold beer stops on the game drives) and the food was simple and delicious (more 'home style' than hotel restaurants offer, which we loved). When we visited, the lodge was very quiet and the service from the staff was full of personal touches.
Overall we would really recommend a stay here and we very much hope to come back.
Featuring a restaurant that includes outdoor dining by a Boma bonfire, Rhulani Safari Lodge in the Big 5 Madikwe Game Reserve also offers wildlife viewing opportunities.

The staff were most accommodating and friendly. The food a delight - delicious and beautifully presented. Our ranger, Elliott so knowledgeable and he worked very hard to deliver the Big 5. The accommodation met all our expectations, loved the different towel detail on the beds every day! Weather was tricky but having our fireplaces on after a chilly evening game drive made it home away from home. The game vehicles are in good condition and the blankets on board very welcome. The wifi is very stable in rooms and in common areas.
Located within the Madikwe Game Reserve, Last Word Madikwe features a lush garden, terrace and outdoor pool. The malaria free reserve boasts the Big 5, a variety of wildlife and birds.

I would like to thank the entire Last Word team for the unforgettable stay we had there. Everything was beyond excellent. I wouldn’t be able to make the word limit here if I wanted to list what we liked about our stay. Gold standard of hospitality - I’ll tell you that. For those who are interested mostly in the game drives - I can assure you Damien is the best in this business, simply unbelievable skill and knowledge of the subject - you are guaranteed to learn something new about the wildlife. Thank you a thousand times Team!!!!

The location is magical and the game drives were out of this world - you couldn’t ask for more. But actually what made the stay so special for us were the staff and the food, which were both world class. Worth every penny!

What a place! I could honestly go on forever about how amazing Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge is! We were return travelers and had another truly incredible stay. From stunningly beautiful rooms, wonderful and very friendly staff, absolutely amazing wildlife and delicious food- nothing is short of perfect. We just wish we stayed longer! We will definitely be back!

Difficult and bumpy road to get there when you cannot locate the proper route to Madikwe River lodge but the magic unravels as soon as you get close : the animals, the vegetation and one lonely but warm lady at the post who welcomes you to adventure!
Blissfully peaceful, Matildah gazing at you while the other impalas peer from the bushes, one cheeky monkey sitting on the roof while the invisible chirping and singing lull you to quietude, right next to the river.
The lady at the reception readily informed the Chef about my meal preferences and I was served fish, veggies and rice for dinner.
The morning safari was conducted by a guide who read the tracks in Nature and drove us to a cheetah, a napping lion, a rising rhino, munching wildebeests and 3 black rhinos not happy at visitors for disturbing their early morn routine ;), and another napping lion! We looked fondly at the baby elephant and had to be careful when a big male elephant "in mas" came our way.
It was one beautiful experience.

This reserve only allows visitors that stay in one of the lodges so their are no day tours. The guides all work together so they give eachother locations of animals they’ve spotted but than they go in turns to the animal so they don’t get overwhelmed by a traffic jam of tourists.

Madikwe is reclaimed farmland, so there are not the very large herds you may see in Kruger. Some of them are sizable - for example, they have a herd of African buffalo of nearly 500 head. One of the main draws is that it is Malaria free.
The reserve is a good 5-hour drive from Johannesburg, at least. So it is a long way, and the roads in South Africa are not always safe, so consider this - it is worthwhile checking about a flight.
The landscapes in the reserve are varied and very beautiful, there are incredible sightings to be had and there is a good variety of animals and birds too.

The two game drives via Tau Game Lodge were exceptional.
The two game drives via Tau Game Lodge were exceptional. Israel, the ranger, was very knowledgeable and friendly and was able to track down 4 out 5 of the "big 5" game. It was surreal being so close to some of the animals. Photo ops are aplenty. I have nothing bad to say about Madikwe.

Madikwe is one of the best reserves we ever visited, everything is well looked after and there are some really beautiful spots. We only stayed at one lodge, (Rockfig, which was excellent) so I can't comment on the lodges, but I believe they are all top class. We had 2 safaris per day and we saw the big 5 and a lot of other animals. Beautiful fauna and flora, trees and birds. it was a once in a lifetime experience.
