The location is good.
It's an institution and history.
One of the Southern Drakensberg's best kept secrets, the gateway to Sani Pass, Mkomazana Mountain Cottages lies snugly in the heart of the Sani Pass, within a magnificent World Heritage Site.

Where do I start, the host Bettie is warm, she came out to welcome us as we drove onto the property. Our cottage was located on the lake - it was beautiful to have breakfast on the patio overlooking the lake and watching the birds build nests. The unit was large, spacious, immaculately clean and well catered for. We also received freshly baked scones every morning which adds a nice homely feel. Although we did not book our Sani pass tour with Bettie, she went the extra mile of contacting the tour company and confirming our pickup as well as printing the required forms for the border post. The entire property is very well maintained especially the hiking trials leading out and up the mountain. This was an excellent place to unwind and detach - there is no cell phone signal and wifi is only available at the clubhouse - with so much to do, this was not an issue for us. I would definitely book here again, it is all the little additional touches from the host Bettie that makes this place special.

Lovely homemade bread, cheese, eggs and fruit made a lovely breakfast. Loved having the dogs come to visit us. Beautiful flowers growing all around . Decor is outstanding and the kitchenette had absolutely everything that we needed for our convenience and definitely the biggest bed I have ever slept in

The experience is private and personal.
Host is very welcoming and provided excellent service. Unit is self catering and well equipped, even provided necessary soap tablets for the dishwasher. Has a good variety of board games and even firewood was provided.
Fishing for bass in the dam was successful.
It is great that the unit is also off the grid and gardens are well maintained.
Unit closely situated to nearby towns for additional supplies, and is a short drive to a number of hiking trails.

Good location and price. Safe area for walking and plenty of places to visit nearby. Trish's recommendation for dinner at Morecroft Manor was excellent.
Jeff offered us parking in their carport overnight as there were thunderstorms about. Much appreciated.

Unpretentious town with several excellent restaurants (the Whistling Goat had the best food and the best prices)...with a Spar supermarket just down the road in nearby Underberg (15 miles/27 km.) For BIRDING and BIRDERS: exceptionally good for rare species (Flufftails - contact Stuart McLean [has a web site] for best bird guiding especially if you have your own vehicle. Many different habitats in the area...and the birds up at Sani Pass - many Drakensberg specialties. Having been north to bird at Wakkerstrom and the giant marshes in town and that area, we can say that Himeville is just as good (with many overlap species...and many only found at Sani Pass). Himeville has better restaurants and is 20-30% less expensive than Wakkerstrom. We had a wonderful time here.

Himeville is ideal to get to Cobham the entrance to the Drakenberg park. Our stay was too short we had 2 nights due to delayed flight, plan at least 3 if not 5. Nice quiet place, great pizza place "The Grind" in Underberg just done the road (petrol station here too) missed out on local shops as we were walking in the park. Lovely local arts/craft/cafe "Giant Cup Cafe" at Sani Pass road got all my holiday crafts/gifts here. Great walks with easy to follow trails.

We were in a lodge and our friends were in the next one. We all ate together. A
Meal was supplied the first night as arranged. It was roast chicken and all trimmings and was delicious. The next night we had a barbecue with loads of meat provided. We had chicken piri piri and chicken curry. Everything was very tasty.
We went to Himeville by taxi from San Lameer. It was a 4 hour drive but interesting route. We went up the Sani Valley pass to Lesotho which was a long and challenging route in a Land Cruiser. That was an organised day trip. Amazing views.
We would not have gone to San Lameer for a night if we come again. We returned direct to Durban.

I didn't realise that the trip from the Howick turn off was 160kms long, the road had many potholes, so better to drive it in the day time.
I loved the museum, the Christmas market and the Angora weaving place.
The people were very friendly and helpful.
Definitely worth a return visit.

Himeville is a sweet little country town with a weaving shop, antiques shop, quite a few nice restaurants and cafes, and a very informative museum run by volunteers as a labour of love. It is close to the hiking trails and Sani Pass.

Very nice and quiet premisse, with a lovely garden. Everything is well maintained. The room was great, spacious and comfortable. We had a nice breakfast, good variety of the standard eggs and bacon.
Location is perfect for your excursion to Lesotho. Book at Sanipassprivatetours.com and ask for David; you'll have an excellent experience with him! Besides going up the Pass, there's not much in Himeville.
For dinner, they booked us a table at the Moorcroft Manor. We can recommend that as well.
Trish & her husband were so welcoming. We arrived later in the evening after a very long drive. The cottage had everything we needed to be self sufficient. We cooked a meal in the evening. We were planning to drive the Sani Pass the following day & they gave us advice on the drive. Himeville is such a beautiful place. On Trish's recommendation we had lunch at the Stone House Kitchen the following day & the food was great. We will definitely return next time we are in SA.
Very cute apt in the beautiful town of Himeville. Great location for a trip to the Sani pass. The apt was very clean with a comfortable bed, kitted out kitchen, garden area, fire, jacuzzi. Judy was a very welcoming host and we really enjoyed our stay.
