Meijer's Rust, hotel in De Rust

Meijer’s Rust is located on a working farm surrounded by the Swartberg Mountains and 0.6 mi from Meiringspoort with its gorge and waterfalls.

Loved the rustic old style of living quarters of the old Stone Cottage. Weather was a little on the chilly side, but the outside and inside fireplaces made it warm and comfortable. The cozy comfortable bed was amazing. Taking a lovely hot shower outside was amazing. Hope to be back soon. Thanks to the host, Barry, for making our short stay a memorable one.

The owners of the property go out if their way to make you feel welcome. I highly recommend booking dinner, it was a 3 course feast, home cooked and delicious. The room and bathroom is spacious and comfortable, with a patio overlooking the garden. Good value for the price.

The View is great and close to shops. The bed was comfortable, and the pool had a nice touch. Frogs at night with the patio doors open and cicada chirring. It was a decent stay but a bit overpriced.

Room @ Irissa Sanctuary, hotel in De Rust

This was a great off-the-beaten track private home-stay for a solo traveler - or a very cozy couple. This was my second time in De Rust. Irissa is located uphill in a residential area, so is quiet and tranquil rather than noisy and disruptive, as places along the main N12 drag can be. Large garden in the rear and enclosed security parking on site. There are many restaurants nearby downslope in the village, but a big plus for me was that De Rustica Olive Estate, 2023 and 2024 winner (out of 1000 initial entries) of the EVOOleum World's Best Olive Oil tasting contest in Madrid, is only about 5 minutes away, where there is a nice and very moderately priced restaurant with commanding views of the estate in the shop complex. The Doornkraal Padstal, a great traditional boer breakfast/lunch spot (excellent roosterkoek!) is just 9 minutes away, both places in the direction of Oudtshoorn. Irissa hostess Karen Miller is a genteel, gracious, and charming hostess, an accompished artist and a yoga teacher with extensive local knowledge, who gives you free run of the house and garden. Good WiFi at Karen's Irissa Sanctuary too! I had a delightful two-night stay!

We arrived for one night on Jan 3 2023 and basically De Rust was closed. All restaurants had the night off save for one pub who managed to serve us their last 2 portions of bobotie thankfully. Could not even get fuel for the car or cash out of the ATM.

We loved this beautiful little town in a panoramic setting with various vintage deli's, coffee shops and antique shops. Meiringspoort is jaw-dropping beautiful. The let-down was the begging children day and night in the street where tourists walk and eat. They were clearly on drugs. The one was extremely forceful and stood infront of our car, refusing to move unless we gave him money and the same child followed us all the way as we walked to our restaurant and back to our accommodation again later that night. It definitely did not feel safe and felt sad at the same time. Surely this should be a social responsibility issue for the town management to sort out?

    Nice quaint little village.

Nice quaint little village. We tested the hiking trail on the Meijers Rust farm, which were nice. Saw a large group of baboons and some buck. Also the Meiringspoort waterfall is well worth a visit - short walk from the parking up to the waterfall and the scenery is just spectacular.

Small but charming, surrounded by lovely mountains, on the South side of the Meiringspoort Pass. A good trip would loop around Meiringspoort Pass (tarred, easy driving) to Prince Albert and return via Swartberg Pass (tougher driving). Both of these Passes take a while to drive, both are worth the effort, and are different enough to make both worthwhile.

Amazing location and lovely finishes inside, the soundproofing is great between the Chalets. The mountains are breathtaking, felt safe and secure and wished we stayed longer. We had our 2 dogs with us and were able to explore the beautiful farm, big bonus. Very close to Meiringspoort Waterfall and the town De Rust. The Owner is friendly and there is wood available to purchase.
