Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbor and economic hub. Claimed by the Spanish, Portuguese and British, the city now reflects the typical South American cultural patchwork. With a strong Italian and Spanish legacy, its soul dances to the rhythm of tango and the African-influenced "candombe."
With approximately 1.5 million people, it houses almost half of the country’s population. Montevideo has a rich cultural life with important institutions like the Solis Theater.
Carnival is Montevideo's most significant celebration, and the "murgas" play and dance "candombe" in the streets, turning the city into a big party. If you plan to book a hotel in Montevideo for carnival, check the availability beforehand!
Don’t miss the "Ciudad Vieja" old town, Independence Square and the views from the top of the Salvo Building. Rodo Park is the most traditional park in the city, while the "Rambla" esplanade offers 8 miles of sandy beaches.
Whether you prefer a cozy B&B in the historic district, a hotel on the beach, or accommodations near Carrasco International Airport, check out the Montevideo deals available on Booking.com!

Montevideo is a very pretty city with an amazing Rambla at least 30 kl long. It has many parks. It's rich in statues, museums and culture in general. There river beaches all along the south of the cite from west to east. These beaches are clean and easily accessible. The public transport, buses, are prolific; you never need to wait too long for one to arrive. Taxis are also plentiful and affordable.

I had planned to tour Uruguay for a month.
I had planned to tour Uruguay for a month. Instead, I only stayed in the country for 10 days, i.e., 8 days in Montevideo and 2 days in Colonia del Sacramento. Aside from the architectural highlights and the Museo de Andes 1972, I found Uruguay to be expensive and the local residents not friendly or unwelcoming. To the point of being stuck-up and conceited. I visited Brazil and Paraguay prior, and I found the people there to be much more friendlier and welcoming.

I ended up going to Montevideo as I was already going to Buenos Aires. In my five days in Uruguay, I managed to visit Colonia, Montevideo (where I stayed) and Punta del Este. I got a good overview of the country within five days. Not sure if I would have made a trip just to Uruguay, but I am very glad that I added this on to my Buenos Aires trip. I recommend a visit.

Nice city, port city, at first we were a little disappointed because we were just seeing the poor rundown, dilapidated “ old city “ but as we got to know the city and walked and moved around, we took a bus down Julio 18, other buses in different directions, and branched out we discovered its charms, nice residential areas, parks, clean, loved all the tree lined streets etc. We read and heard that of all South American cities Montevideo was the most expensive, I would have to agree with that. For 2-3 days Montevideo is a nice visit especially if you are going on to Punta del Este !!!!!……but thats a different review.

Very expensive to eat (Macanudo at Plaza Fabini was great value. Same for Bar Touring).
But many activities are free: Artigas Mausoleum; Casa do Governo; Mirador Panoramico; History of Art Meseum.
Very chill city, no traffic chaos, everything is delayed: late breakfast; lunch; people dine at 21/22.

Friendly locals, perfect weather, lots to see and take in on foot. Food was amazing, especially the chivitos. At night it did not feel as safe in the old town and seafront areas as it feels in the daytime. That, and maybe the amount of graffiti everywhere, was the only area that need to be improved. Overall though it was a lovely both to visit and I look forward to visiting again.

See reviews by guests who stayed at hotels in Montevideo
My wife and her sister had originally booked this hotel as a base for a week on their trip to Uruguay and Argentina. This turned into just one night.
The reasons for this are complex. Firstly, on the positive side, the staff (reception) are top class and correspond to a hotel of this category.
The Hotel is affordable for smaller budgets and located within walking distance to the Buquebus ferry terminal, so its a perfect hub for those coming from or going to Uruguay. Also, it right in the middle of the historic city center and allows to discover Montevideo easily
The king-sized beds were quite nice. The hotel is located in Punta Carenas, a neighborhood with many options of restaurants. It was easy to access the Montevideo's rambla (seaside / riverside avenue).
The hotel is well situated, clean, and value for money in the city centre (which I find better to explore Montevideo for the first time in a few days than the other areas).
This rustic hotel is beautifully located in central Montevideo, close to plenty of amenities. Our room was very clean and comfortable and staff helpful and friendly.
