Close to Badlands, Wall Drug and Deadwood.

Close to Badlands, Wall Drug and Deadwood. The canyon was beautiful in October. and the locals were the epitome of friendly. So were a lot of the guests. Breakfast at Wall Drug is better than any continental breakfast. Deadwood is a tourist trap, but a cute one. The badlands were spectacular. There is a hospital about 30 miles away in Philip. I had a brief stay in that hospital and it was unlike anything I've ever experienced. We were thinking of moving up there; everyone was so friendly and real. Not at all like your corporate hospital. It was like mayberry RFD.

    Wall seemed somewhat over-rated.

Wall seemed somewhat over-rated. Perhaps it's better in the summer. Wall Drug was quite a disappointment. No ice water, and no 5 cent coffee. They close at 5 PM, despite their website indicating 6 PM. Wall is really small, so finding your way is easy. Even I didn't get lost! The Red Rock Restaurant was great. Affordable prices. Diverse menu, even a small salad bar. Food was good. Great service, too. Best Western Plains was OK. No elevator, and room.doors open directly to the outside, like older motels. Indoor pool and hot tub are fabulous. Breakfast included cereal, pastries, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, pancakes, yogurt. Hot chocolate and hot apple cider mix available, with tea and coffee. Juice too, and apples. In retrospect, just stopping in Wall for a few hours rather than spending the night might be a better choice.

We ate at a couple restaurants and the servers were all wonderful. The food is certainly fine and in keeping with the wild west ambiance of the area. Wall Drug, which we've visited over the years, is over-hyped, over-expanded and rather disgusting. But people keep coming!

Unless you plan to visit the Badlands National Park, I would not recommend an overnight stop in Wall if on a road trip. The Wall drug store is more of a tourist trap, stop to have a look and drive on to Rapid City which is just under an hour away. You will have better options for accommodation and restaurants.

We stayed only one night to visit Badlands National Park.

We stayed only one night to visit Badlands National Park. Wall is a great place to go for that: we visited the park late afternoon to see the sunset and again the next morning to do a few trails before it got too hot. Wall also offers grocery stores and restaurants/bars which stay open late so we could grab something to eat even after dark. From our hotel, we walked everywhere.

Wall Drug is kinda hokie but still fun to hit up, at least for the 5 cent coffee and their donuts. The main thing about Wall, SD is that it is the gateway to Badlands National Park close to the Pinnacles Overlook. This way you can run over to Pinnacles for sunset easily!

We booked a family unit at the hotel and we were very happy with it: the unit was essentially a small apartment with two rooms, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. With three queensize beds, it was very comfortable for us as a family of four. From the hotel, you can easily walk to the attractions in Wall - everything is essentially within max. 7 minutes walking distance. Even though the hotel was fully booked, it was quiet and well managed.

The personnel was very nice and helpful. Despite some reservation issues, the support was very excellent and effective. We were very grateful for the way it was handled. The room was clean and nicely equipped. The breakfast was served in the restaurant near the hotel, so it could be a disadvantage for some guests but concerning the town and its unique attractions, we consider this as an interesting feature.

The view of the setting sun from the porches out back of the "cabins" was great - the highway is visible, but far enough away and quiet at night, so no problem. Great beds! Very comfortable. Facilities are fine. The Western theme inside definitely gives these places a memorable vibe. Great stop-over place while travelling, and very close to Wall Drug if you want to check that out.
