    Beautiful, quaint historic mining town.

Beautiful, quaint historic mining town. The train was the ideal mode of transportation by which to arrive. The stores, restaurants and museums are terrific. Everyone in town--to a person--was friendly and gracious.

Such a unique place in this world.

Such a unique place in this world. A high alpine location ideally suited for exploring the heights of the San Juan mountains. It was the start of an off season lull so some of the retail and restaurant establishments were closed. The ones that remained were enough to suffice our short stay. The drive to either from Ouray or Durango will test your driving skills and the passengers will be enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery this side of Switzerland.

The scenery is worth staying in Silverton We go there and take our side by side to ride the trails that are nearby. The city fathers are not very accommodating for us as visitors as there is very little parking for pickups with trailers. Also riding licensed and legal side by sides like I have isn't allowed to be ridden on the streets in Silverton. For some reason we aren't welcome in Silverton anymore. Why the merchants wouldn't want us the visit and spend money there is beyond me.

Silverton is a charming historical mining town.

Silverton is a charming historical mining town. You can tell that the people of Silverton take pride in their town by the way they maintain the older buildings and are working to restore others. The museum in town was one of the best we've ever seen. It's amazing. It's a must-see for anyone visiting. We took the mining tour that took us underground and provided an extensive view of what miners endured and the kind of work required of them. The self-tour at Mayflower was also amazing. We had lunch at Thee Pitts Again and it was wonderful. What a beautiful hidden jewel. We'll be back.

We were in Silverton in the evenings only since we were there to go trail riding with our UTV. The town was very busy which made the restraunts very busy with lines. Surprisingly several restraunts closed by 8pm so the ones still open were more than busy and crowded. We had a pickup and trailer to haul our UTV and we felt that the city was trying to limit where we could park. Because of this there were less UTV riders and thus less tourists in town. This assuredly is hurting the businesses in town. Beyond this the scenery is stunning with the mountains being on both sides of the town.

All the towns in the San Juan Mountains have there distinct character: Telluride (expensive and trendy), Ouray (crowded but a gateway to adventure), Lake City (OHV heaven or hell depending on your opinion) and Silverton, an authentic mining town with a rugged nature vibe. Silverton is the best for feeling the heartbeat of the mountains.
