Known for beautifully undulating coastline attracting a wealth of wildlife, laidback Monterey is set on a small peninsula. Though now more famous for Monterey Jack cheese, it was once an important sardine fishing town. Some ex-canning factories now house galleries and shops on a street renamed Cannery Row after a novel by John Steinbeck. A museum and his former home in nearby Salinas can be visited.
The fantastic Monterey Bay Aquarium houses a fascinating range of local sealife, which is so prevalent here that you can often see seals basking on craggy beaches, or sea lions roaring away under piers in Fisherman’s Wharf. Whalewatching tours also depart from here.
South is the Monterey State Historic Park, site of historic buildings including Custom House and the Old Whaling Station with a path made from whalebone. To the east are a couple of Monterey hotels on the beach on Booking.com, and there are also several Monterey hotels with indoor pools.
Right by Monterey Peninsula Airport is one of the city’s 7 golf courses, and there are 3 golf courses near the Laguna Seca Raceway.
Whether you’re here for the Monterey Jazz Festival, or for driving the Big Sur Pacific coast road to the south, if you’re staying with kids, don’t forget to check out the Dennis the Menace Park.
Monterey has a lot to offer visitors. Food at all levels, plenty of sights to see and activities to do, and drives around the area are very nice. Hotels there need a lot of updating and general maintenance though. Monterey gets so many tourists, I suspect all year round, and yet their hotels are just not up to par with other tourists destinations. It's really disappointing because their rates reflect what you would expect from a very very nice hotel but in actuality, they very outdated, services are lacking, and generally a big disappointment to the overall experience of being in such a beautiful part of California.

Monterey and the area around is absolutely beautiful, we had a stroll in the morning as far as the pier and we enjoyed it a lot: the sea lions, Cannery Row all of it.
We just booked the wrong hotel.

Beautiful place, amazing scenic drives and clean beaches.
Beautiful place, amazing scenic drives and clean beaches.
Must cover - Evening walk on fisherman's wharf with family (my top#1 favorite thing to do) , visit to Pfeiffer Beach (one of the best beach, can spend half a day easily), 17 miles drive, drive from Monterey to Bigsur, Aquarium, Whale watching. I have seen folks going crazy for seafood, but I am vegetarian so have to be happy with limited options, if you are seafood lover this could be on your list.
I also wanted to try snorkeling and scuba diving but could not do this.

I've been going to Monterey for years and am always amazed at how they make it feel like a working community, not just a great tourist destination. I like how they take pride in their Spanish/Mexican heritage and it is reflected in a lot of the local architecture, both old and new.

The best part was getting out of the heat!
The best part was getting out of the heat! For the most part it was sunny and 65 degrees F! There's lots of walks and bike rides. Lots of restaurants and things to do and there's always the sea lions to hang with. As the capitol of the republic of California, Monterey has lots of historical things to see.

The sea and the beach with sea lions and seals provide an amazing setting.
Wandering among the beautiful and special shops along Canary Row is an experience in itself
The hotel was so cute from the outside! The rooms were spacious and clean and comfortable and everything we'd hoped for. The best part was the staff! Probably the most friendly and helpful staff we'd met along our road trip!
They had wonderful knowledge of the area and shared many tips with us, we would have missed the Monterey farmer's market, and the Butter House without them :P
Thank you very much!

It’s a lovely spot, we had a sea view, it had a balcony, nice space, and an electric log fire thing which was awesome.
There’s no safe, but it’s pretty secure.
The car park is good, you park anywhere and get a card for your window.
