The rooms are simple and nice. The hotel looks recently renovated and it's a great looking space. The beds were comfy, and my partner loved having AC. The amenities are great. Having a cold water fill station and available laundry in the hotel was very convenient. Staff were friendly and fabulous.

Hilo is real Hawai'i, not a resort town. There are no white sandy beaches like the Kona side, although there are beaches, they are usually black rock beaches. The food scene is excellent however where most of your restaurants are locally owned and have all different types of food. Hilo is on the Windward side of Hawai'i Island so be prepared for rain. It's why it's so green there! Take a chance and experience Hawai'i Island like the Locals do. Respect the Locals and the place they call home.

Perfect starting point to visit volcanoes (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Volcano National Park). Less touristic than Kona, it lays on the more humid side of Big Island. Beautiful vegetation in the surroundings, the town center has all the necessary shops and Malls

Felt like a small town where ordinary locals lived - not just lots of resorts!
Close to a few nice coastal beaches, interesting historical centres to visit - like the Tsunami Museum etc.
Also access to inland attractions like nearby volcanoes, lava flows and walks to waterfalls.

Hilo is an interesting place with friendly people - like all of Hawaii. It has an authentic in tact diverse culture that the locals are happy to share. Plenty of restaurants, an excellent farmers market, an abundance of outdoor activities. Lots to do in town and around from the volcano to the rain forests and small mill towns north of the city. It rains in Hilo so be sure to have a parka handy. The zoo is well worth a visit too.

First time visiting Hilo. A very friendly laid back town.
First time visiting Hilo. A very friendly laid back town. Lots of great dining options, Gardens, Caves, Volcano National Park, Water Falls, snorkeling. Beaches are more on the rocky side. They’re not all sandy Southern California beaches, so be careful if body surfing or boogie boarding. A lot of reefs. Good idea to have water shoes for foot protection. Take an hour drive up to Mauna Kea observatory. Visitor center is above the clouds at 9200 feet. Or drive up to the summit at 14,000 feet (4x4 mandatory). Incredible views and sunset. If moonless night the star gazing will be incredible.

Hilo had an old-Hawaiian charm.
Hilo had an old-Hawaiian charm. Downtown was walkable with charming, artsy and unique shops. All four restaurants we ate at were unexpectedly excellent. And the location was perfect—very close to the airport, an hour to Volcanos National Park, the starting point for a multi-stop road trip north (highly recommend Botanical Gardens), and a nearby park/beach where we saw a sea turtle. We also had great weather!
