    Lovely little town, exceeded expectations.

Lovely little town, exceeded expectations. We had known little about John Brown's raid & the aftermath - appreciated the reasonably priced & free things to do. John Brown Museum very informative. Really liked how everything was close together - rangers helpful & pleasant.

Hotel was great, restaurant about ruined evening, 55 minutes to get food after ordering, cold when arrived. Waitress told us special was crab cakes, not very good and lukewarm. We are not complainers so went with it. Tipped well, wasn't our waitress fault, kitchen was backed up with 8-10 customers. Really

We were visiting for a wedding in Middletown, MD.

We were visiting for a wedding in Middletown, MD. Arrived at BWI airport and drove to the house. I would say STAY OUT OF HARPERS FERRY until after the road construction is complete - maybe Christmas 2023. (Or travel early in the morning or late at night.) The construction/road closure detour was long on curvy roads, with traffic, accidents, and hour-long back-ups. We liked the Harpers Ferry Brewery overlooking the Potomac River (located just before the construction and road closures), and hikes on the Appalachian Trail that were close to our house. We never made it to the town of Harpers Ferry as it was on the other side of the construction detour.

    Beautiful location and interesting town.

Beautiful location and interesting town. Steep streets made walking difficult for senior citizens like us. Little parking and few restaurants in town and both seemed expensive. John Brown museum was very interesting and no charge.

We are Civil War History buffs and my husband is an Adjutant with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We enjoyed the history aspects of our visit. We had all of our meals in Charles Town, only ice cream at Harper's Ferry. The John Brown Museum was so dark inside it was hard to see the writings on the wall. Very little was stated about his hanging. The condition of the streets was notable as no trash anywhere which was quite refreshing. The shuttle to the downtown area eliminated the parking headache which we liked very much. I think some folks in period dress would add to some of the shops and street. We enjoyed the weapons demo and the speech on Friday afternoon.

Quaint place to see some history.

Quaint place to see some history. The various taverns and inns are fun places to have enjoy a drink or meal, with beautiful views. I highly recommend the Rabbit Hole, get their pretzel sticks (you're welcome). We went back a 2nd time for more. Once you are parked, you can walk around town at your leisure. Wear good walking shoes and plan for climbing a lot of stairs. Plan ahead and get your $20 National Park 3-day pass, print it out, and stick it in your windshield. This was new since our last visit, and we had to drive all the way to the visitor center a few miles away to get one. The main parking lot in town is often full, so get their early if you want to park and walk the town. You cannot park anywhere else. The only other options are to park outside town (up a huge hill) and walk into town, or the visitor center parking, which has a shuttle. Lots of cute shops in town, pricey and artsy but fun! We stayed just outside of town in a modern hotel but next time would like to try a B&B in town for the convenience, as most come with parking. Great place to launch a day hike on the Appalachian trail or tour the area battlegrounds. Snow Tubing is new nearby - snowriders.com. We drove through and checked it out, you are better off reserving your spot ahead of time, but looked like a lot of fun!
