The Olena at Keauhou Bay, hotel in Captain Cook

Boasting air-conditioned accommodation with a private pool, The Olena at Keauhou Bay is situated in Kailua-Kona. This property offers access to a terrace, free private parking and free WiFi.

The apartment is really wonderful - beautifully designed and with so many little details that not just make it nice to look at, but also really comfortable to stay here! The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need and more - there were even a huge bowl of coffee beans for the coffee makers (!) and a good selection of tees. Same in the bathroom, there were all amenities you might need, even toothpaste was provided! Really fantastic service all in all! The sofa and bed were comfortable and everything was clean. The outside area is also nice to enjoy. We had a small issue with the AC in the bedroom, but received help immediately. Overall, this was the best experience on any apartment I ever rented for a short visit!

OUTRIGGER Kona Resort and Spa, hotel in Captain Cook

This resort offers a multi-level fantasy pool with a 200-foot water slide, manta-ray viewing, and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

The most important reason that people book here is because you can watch the manta from the resort itself! So am I! There were viewing spots ready at nighttime so guests could watch manta without getting into the tours. For someone who isn't a good swimmer, it is definitely for me. The restaurant surprised me a little with its amazing food. Had a local shrimp and the spiced tuna and they are delicious! During the day, there are plenty of resort facilities, a huge pool, and water activities. The surroundings are perfect for a walk, beautifully by the beach. The receptionist gave me a shell necklace as a welcome, which added to the experience.

Captain Cook is a spread-out sort of a place so it's difficult to characterise. There is an excellent pizza place there and a couple of other restaurants plus a supermarket and gas station. You can get down to the coast, but it's a steep walk. The coastline down there is beautiful.

Further away from the hustle & bustle of Kona, but has great little restaurants and a nice grocery store. It is a great little rather laid back town with historic places and good snorkeling/ swimming on quite a few beaches within 5- 10 miles.

Captain Cook is a lovely area - but don't count on actual beaches as in lots of sand! There is lava everywhere and people simply snorkel or body surf around it. There are a couple of small pockets of sand. Check out the cloud forest up in the hills, simply a hiking area that may mist more often than lower down. I've heard you can see sea turtles and dophins if you go early enough down to the bay, but otherwise there's a much nicer place to view the turtles, at least, north of the Kona airport, and at any time of day. The only long beach is by a hotel north of the airport. And anywhere on the Big Island, there is lava! So.Much.Lava!

Kealakekua Bay offers some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island. The town has an array of grocery stores, restaurants and accommodations—and kayak rentals for snorkeling at the bay. There are also antique shops, coffee and mac nut farms to tour and several historic sites and heiau. A lovely historic town with activities for the whole fam.

We loved Hale-Hoola B & B and the lovely quiet location with nothing to disturb except frogs and some farm animals. We had a lovely lanai on which to relax and watch the ocean surrounded by a lovely garden. Our hosts were wonderful and gave us some great information about the area. The breakfast provided was a fabulous home cooked meal that kept you going all day. Hale-Hoola is very peaceful. We are so glad we booked here and not one of the bigger hotels.

A wonderful stay, with fantastic hosts. Such a friendly welcome in an oasis of calm. A little way from Kona for those wanting to hit the town, but for us very worthwhile. Thanks to Ping, Stanley and Max for welcoming us into their home.
