Kitu Kiblu is a little gem in Kilindoni, only 5 minutes from the airstrip. The lodge is completely immersed in nature, with direct access to the ocean and a breathtaking view. The atmosphere is more of a family than an accommodation facility: you feel right away at ease with everyone, and you can immediately switch your brain off and take away any sort of stress that you carry on your shoulders. If you want, you can also organise an encounter with the whale sharks in a responsible and organized manner.
I left a piece of heart in Kitu Kiblu and I'll definitely come back.

Our experience at Maisara was the highlight of our stay in Mafia Island.
Mafia is a laid back remote island. It is described as Zanzibar 10 years ago.
We communicated with Hassan before arriving to arrange for transport from the airport - a quick 15 minute ride (definitely recommend doing this!). We were then welcomed by Abi and a delicious fruit juice.
Our room was equipped with a king sized bed with mosquito netting, a large bathroom, AC, plenty of outlets (including USB ports which was great because we had brought the wrong adapter), beach towels, and a beautiful view of the beach. Having arrived in early June, we felt like we had the island to ourselves. The hotel offers a restaurant with delicious local seafood fare. Our first night we had a lovely and unexpected beachside dinner alongside a bonfire. The seafood was fresh and deliciously prepared.
Abi was able to accommodate a couple of tours for us. On day 1, we snorkeled, went to the Blue lagoon, and had a private lunch on the beach. Our guides were so friendly and informative. On day 2, we hesitantly booked the whale shark tour. Our guide and captain were so patient with us, and encouraged us to get in the water - literally holding our hand in the water. We’re so glad they did, because the whale shark sighting was unbelievable.
The hotel is right on the beach, which offers amazing views of the sunset. The staff at Maisara went above and beyond for us. They really made our experience at Mafia Island an unforgettable one.
Pro tip: bring shillings for tips. The staff more than earn it.

Meremeta lodge
Meremeta Lodge was great. The rooms were clean, cool from AC, and the water hot! Most of all the staff was incredible. They take pride in ensuring that the food is delicious and the experience is exceptional. They arranged daily transport to the dive shop, tours to other areas of the island. When I didn’t prefer the meat as the main dish the cooked chicken instead. I asked if they served it on the island as I had a suspicion they didn’t. As a result, they had plenty of Coke Zero purchased ahead time for me
I highly recommend Meremeta Lodge and if I return, I will definitely be staying with them.

Truly amazing. The staff was the best and the dive center incredible (and so convenient that it's attached to Butiama). Food was wonderful. 10/10 would recommend. Very clean space and the rooms themselves were fairly spacious.

KItu KIblu is very close to KIlidoni and the airport (5 minutes walking, if with a backpack no need for a taxi).
Centre is 15 minutes either by the beach or bay the main road; not great choice of restaurants and better going by night, it's safe and people are very friendly. Don't forget to say hello (mambo) to all men (women seem not appropriate, probably due to muslim religion) and shake your arm to children at the front door, they will repay with a great smile!!
By the beach experience the fisherman village to south and back to town by the jungle, there are a lot of small villages with friendly people.
Otherwise tuktuk is a good mean to move along the island until Chole, to north (nice beaches) better take a taxi. Pay attention at the road to Ras kisimani, beach is wonderful but very tough to get there.
When in Utende I strongly recommend Pamela beach for a lunch or dinner; she's great and let you experience local food.
