Lampang is a charming town with just enough to do for a few days to feel both relaxing and fulfilling. The river, historic bridges, wats, old town, architecture, and food were all draws. Lots of murals and symbols (chickens, horses), a very quiet pace, and friendly people. The things to see are very accessible on foot, but a unique way to see the city is to hire a horse carriage for an hour (about 500 baht). Some of the cafes and restaurants near the river are great quality and have super atmosphere. It is a city to stroll around and explore, enjoying the relaxed pace and sights. It's especially good for a getaway from busy Chiang Mai for a weekend.

Visitors should know that there are 2 Hop Inn hotels in Lampong and close together. 1 is near the city hospital and the other is near the bus station. If you call the number they provide you get a central dispatcher somewhere unknown and you have to know which hotel you made your reservation at. So how would you know?
Attractions not far away are river front bar and restaurants
The central festival mall is close by. Bolt and Grab are available

The best feature is the old town close to the Arts Center...
The best feature is the old town close to the Arts Center with many original wooden houses. The street market is low key, not overtly touristy and showed some local crafts alongside the usual Chiang Mia stuff. The riverside bars and restaurants have good views but the river itself is a disappointment. This ancient city also has many temples.

The Ceramics factories were interesting as were the temples in the city. Then there is the old city wall, railway station , and museum to visit . And a very old house .
Best to hire a car. Public transport not so good.

Other than Kad Kong Ta Walking Street (Saturday & Sunday...
Other than Kad Kong Ta Walking Street (Saturday & Sunday only), several Wats / Temples and a couple museums there didn’t seem to be a lot to see in town. The better attractions seemed to be 30 minutes or more outside of town. We enjoyed eating at "Which Wat Pastry", it's a bit out of the way but has great food and pastries at very reasonable prices. Almost next door to Which Wat is "Grandma's Cafe", we didn't eat there but enjoyed viewing the owner's car collection directly behind the cafe. If you don't have your own transportation and don't want to do an organized tour hiring a taxi for the day at 1000 baht is a good idea. Be careful of the songthaews, we discovered they don't always know where you want to go even though they tell you they do.

Lampang is a very laid back friendly northern town. Not many western tourist there. Food excellent. Plenty temples to see. Only 1 hour from Chiang Mai. Everything extremely good value. Local people friendly and helpful.

Medium-sized rooms, well furnished and comfortable. Pleasant bathroom. Everything was spotlessly clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the service is excellent - as is the cooked breakfast that's included in the room price.
The location is very quiet, away from the main city. We chose it because it's quite convenient for Lampang Sports School and it turned out to be a great place to stay.
The fueniture is hard-core vintage, it seems to be there since the 60es (including an old TV and old phone), something absolutely worth experiencing. The staff is very friendly and the room is quite spacious. The location is great, very close to the night market and city center. There is also a parking area next to the hotel.
