Khon Kaen is a very busy and crowded city. They desperately need to install traffic lights at many of the intersections. I've never been in a city of this size where they did not have traffic lights at busy intersections. With that said, I stayed at a hotel near the Bueng Kaen Nakhon Reservoir and it is a great place to walk in the evenings. Also, there are many great places to eat with a wide variety of food to choose from.

Khon Kaen is the regional capital of central Isaan.
Khon Kaen is the regional capital of central Isaan. For tourism, the National Museum and Central Shopping centre are very good. There are outstanding private hospitals, a zoo 30 minutes to to the north and some very nice temples. Cinema here is very good including English language films. Shopping includes bespoke tailoring and expert picture framing. Worth staying a couple of days. Don't miss Baan Dong Bang Museum 40 minutes drive east.

You really need a reason to go to Khon Kaen, but it is pleasant and inexpensive. Central Khon Kaen shopping center is nice.
The Sirindhorn Museum is fantastic for those interested in dinosaurs. It is outside of Khon Kaen but worth the visit.

There is plenty to do in Khon Kaen and lots of places to visit. I would definitely recommend a vist to Ton Tann night Market. A vast variety of food stalls with wonderful food together with general market selling clothing and many other goods. There is also live entertainment with a number of bars close by.

Khon Kaen is my waypoint for journeys to the north not accessible by train, so I don't see the sights (like bouldering). Khon Kaen, compared to frenetic and chaotic Bangkok, seems sober, even sedate. However, Khon Kaen grows on you, because it has everything you could want, and is manageable. No traffic jams! Getting around is easy with tuk tuks (pricey), song taews, a municipal bus system, and Grab.
My favorite restaurant is a solid and reliable "boiled rice place," at Pimphasut and Clang Muang, open 'til 1:00am:

For us it is really nice since we have family living there.
For us it is really nice since we have family living there. Visiting the Khon Kaen museum is well worth a trip to see the history of Khon Kaen and the people living there throughout history.
We recommend using Grab for getting around Khon Kaen since it is cheap and working really well. If you want to drive around and explore more of Khon Kaen and Isaan renting a car is well worth it. We rented a car for a for a couple of days one week and for our last week and went on several trips that we enjoyed. Visiting different markets is well worth it and the Saturday market on the road close to Romantic Inn is a nice way to spend the evening with good food and friendly people.

I had a fantastic stay at the Kisa Hotel! The highlight of my day was definitely the swimming pool, where I had a wonderful time teaching my girlfriend to swim. The room was top-notch, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was a real treat, offering a delightful variety of both Thai and Western dishes. I would highly recommend this hotel for a memorable and enjoyable experience.
The location is about 4 mins (car/motorcycle) away from the popular parts of the nightlife in Khon Kaen. So it was easy to get get around and come back at a suitable time.
The staff were respectful and friendly. Always greeted.
Booked this hotel as we wanted to be close to the airport which is only 5-10mins in a taxi. The room was very big, clean and spacious for the price. Very good value for money.
