Walking through the woods outside the town was the best...
Walking through the woods outside the town was the best thing for us - especially seeing the first sunrise of the year! Not a lot to see in Kiruna itself, but the Ice Hotel and the Sami museum at Jukkasjarvi are a short bus ride away. We would have liked to have visited Kiruna Church, but it's being moved! It was at Kiruna where we got our best view of the Northern Lights. We enjoyed burgers at the Empes place in Kiruna, but mostly cooked for ourselves as we had our own kitchen. There is a ski slope but it looks very limited.

Kiruna is a weird town that is in the midst of being moved due to the mine expanding. It is very difficult to get around without a car, there are buses but taxis are extortionately priced & buses don’t go everywhere!
There’s a lovely little ski field but we had to walk there as no public transport to get to it, it’s bizarre that it’s not promoted more for tourists.
We had the best time dog sledding with Arctic Dog Sled and the food at Spill Saluhall & Eatery was delicious.

Staff a front desk could be a little friendlier, shower curtain a little longer. Orientation to first time visitors could be more comprehensive as we did not even told that there was a gym (only a spa).

They are moving the city so the old city looks like a ghost...
They are moving the city so the old city looks like a ghost town. There is almost nothing to do and you don't see people on the street. Lots of accumulated snow and many fenced areas. The new city is not well established. It looks like a construction site and has few restaurant options. I didn't find any souvenir shops open to buy gifts. The center closes at 3pm and there is nothing to do in the city. I recommend taking trips outside the city, such as sledding, snowmobiling, and not wasting time in the city center until the move is completely completed.

A super cute small town in the middle of the Swedish arctic.
A super cute small town in the middle of the Swedish arctic. Make sure to book your tours in advance as there is not too much to do in Kiruna itself. Walking through the city and the surrounding nature is absolutely gorgeous in winter. Take care that the Buses needed to go to different places are very unreliable and don't run on weekends or holidays (especially the ones going to ICE hotel and jukkasväri). Not many restaurant options and many were closed when I was there (Christmas time) or closed early.

I wouldn't spend more than 4 days in Kiruna, and make sure you book lightsofvikings.com for northern lights hunting, they do everything professionally, you wouldn't regret it. We saw aurora borealis. And dog sledding. Ice hotel is a must visit! really like how they do it, and about 10-15 minutes walk you can see reindeer farm! And we don't like the old city, because they move the city to the new city, giving us the impression like in the walking dead movie, no one there, so quiet and no life, especially in winter.

See reviews by guests who stayed at hotels in Kiruna
The museum on Sami culture downstairs is very nice - probably why the tourist office lists the Hotell as over of the top 6 items to see in Kiruna. The manager was very kind - we didn’t know how to get to the train station and as a colleague was free, they drove us! Thank you so much!
Best place to stay in kiruna, totally recommend for backpackers ,so clean full of everything that u need , I hope comeback one day , I live the place and the emplacements. Not far from everywhere and the landscape around magnifique.
Magic place everrrr🤗
The property is easy to find and perfectly located at the lake that leads to Jukkasjärvi. We took a 30 min walk to the ice hotel. The house is like a tiny house but with a very spacious bathroom. All in all it looked really high-grade.
The hotel is budget and modest. For one night was ok. Breakfast is good, filtered coffee. Room size is big, has a kettle. Bed is normally comfortable. We used sauna and swimming pool.
