Hotel Diafan, hotel in Baia Mare

Located in the Old Town of Baia Mare, Hotel Diafan features a 600-year-old wine cellar offering a variety of Romanian wines.

The location is in the central square. The staff was very friendly and ready to meet any of our request. The room was very big. The size of the bathroom could havea walk-in shower or even a bathtub. The food in the restaurant was good and at decent prices. Breakfast was good, as you have some choices (salty or sweet), but not too much food put on the table to be waisted. They offered us altervatives that could be prepared if we like. I believe that the hotel have a very good policy against food waiste which is great.

Great base for visiting the UNESCO listed wooden churches.

Great base for visiting the UNESCO listed wooden churches. Do NOT miss the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta Baia Mare is a pleasant town and a great base to explore the Maramures region, especially its famous UNESCO-listed wooden churches which are well worth seeing. Our favourite was Sudesti, it has been well restored and the iconostasis is very impressive, and Carmen who gave us a guide was friendly and very knowledgeable with good English. Most of the churches are not open all day but you can call a number to ask someone to come and open it up for you. There's a small fee per person (5-10 lei) for each church. The Merry Cemetery in Sapanta is extraordinary and unmissable, hundreds of graves which have been decorated with large crosses painted with images of the dead person and poems to their lives, a unique and beautiful local feature. The church is also large and impressively painted, when the golden haloes around the figures' heads catch the light the effect is breathtaking. By chance, we were visiting in the first week of November, just around the time of a Romanian traditional holiday when they decorate their cemeteries and hold services to remember the dead. We weren't able to enter one of the churches because there was a large service going on with hundreds of people outside, but we were pleased and honoured to be able to observe this community event. This made the Merry Cemetery even more impressive - the cemetery itself is a wonder in any case, but it was moving to be there at a time when so many locals were also there to decorate the graves of their loved ones

Very clean city, polite drivers, calm and warm people, great prices for touristic objectives and souvenirs. Breb, Săpânța, Sighetul Marmației, Creasta Cocosului were some of the visited locations and they did not disappoint at all, worth a second and third and forth trip :) I ate in Baia Mare at La Pălincie and at Millennium La Tour, food extremely good, very fast serving, very nice waiters and experience. It's easy to get around Baia Mare, it's not a very big city, Waze always helps :) The Mocănița trip was nice also, but too long and very bumpy on the way back. 2 hours one way, 1.5 hours break, then 2 more hours back, traveling with 10-13 km/h. This I would not do again, but I do not regret the experience, it's worth going once!

The city has a very nice museum of mineralogy (other museums too), a nice view towards the neighboring mountains and is in close proximity to other mountain resorts (Suior, Mogosa, Izvoarele). You can also do trekking towards Ignis peak and Cock's Comb (Creasta Cocosului).

Everything was excellent! The personnel is super supportive and helpful (plus friendly), they always wanted to help and got the answer for every question that we had (even not about hotel). The food was good, quite felt like real homemade food. The swimming pool is amazing (it has warm water, maybe not the best choice for summer, but I suppose in winter it's cool). Location is great, in the mountains, surrounded by the forest and near to the Firiza lake, plus 15min go to Baia Mare.

Staff is the most important resource of any hotel, because it is with the help of specific people that Gran Gala provides hotel services and organizes short stays. I want to note that all the staff in this hotel is very friendly and polite, so an atmosphere of good rest and good mood is created. Since most people want to live on a budget when traveling, the Gran Gala value for money is one of the most important factors. And here is the most delicious pizza. Recommend friends!
