Staying in Sintra next to local castles is not worth it due to complicated logistics - you must walk a lot in the mountains. Better to stay in nearby towns. The sightseeing is perfect. The attractions look in perfect shape and renovated recently.

Sintra is stunning and there is plenty to see and do. Some of the better restaurants were closed when I visited in early November. The nearest supermarket (near the train station) is a long walk. Opening and closing times vary and it can be frustrating. If you are a solo traveller it won't be long before you make new friends.
I enjoyed eating at the Bristol restaurant ( near News Museum) they do bacon and eggs in the morning. Also at Tasca Saloia.
Getting around is easy especially if you enjoy walking. My favourite bar was The Lord Byron who play great music but shut early.
My favourite attraction was the Monserrate palace and it stunning gardens

There is not getting away from the fact that Sintra is heaving with tourists, however we all go for the same reasons,: to experience the beauty of the landscape and the fairytale palaces and it is 100% worth facing the crowds and the cameras and the queue's. Add in an abundance of great restaurants, accommodation and pastel de nata and it's a great recipe for an unforgettable trip.

Sintra is a world on its own - plan to be enchanted and deliberately slow down so you can appreciate the beauty it has to offer - without haste and outside the crowds.
Plan for late evening and early morning strolls - while the tourist crowds are still away.
Plan a visit to Cabo da Roca - such a stunning Atlantic cliff - a worthy counterpart to the dreamy, willowy Sintra.

We only had time to stay in Sintra for less than 24 hours, I wish we had more time to explore more of the palaces. Getting around is easy, but need to allocate enough time. If you have a ticket for Pena Palace, you need to be there right on time for them to honor your ticket and it is a ways away from the center of town. Even once you get past the entrance to the grounds, it is still at least a 10 minute walk up a steep hill. And roads are congested, public transportation can take a long time as well.

The Pena Palace is uncomfortably crowded with long queues.
The Pena Palace is uncomfortably crowded with long queues. It is overpriced when compared to superior castles such as the Loire Valley Chateaus. There is a lot of steep walking required on wet cobblestones. Up close, paint staining and other maintenance issues suggest neglect. All those panoramic photos are probably taken with drones as we could not see the castle from any distance.

This is an immaculate, well presented boutique hotel just metres from the centre of Sintra. It was recently renovated to the highest standard and beautifully done. We got engaged during our stay, so the hotel now owns a piece of our hearts.
The owner is extremely accommodating, going so far as to wait for our arrival to move her car and give us her parking spot. It’s a beautiful family run hotel.
Hotel Nova Sintra was such a treat for us. It is located close to the trains and buses and a short
walk to the downtown area. The outside terrace is massive with a perfect view of the Moorish castle. The breakfast is perfect and staff extremely friendly and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Jorge was a great guy. Very comfortable bed in a cozy room. Zero traffic noise outside! Felt like staying in a real old Portuguese house with character and history, not a spiffy boutique hotel. Very safe neighborhood.
Excellent location. Excellent service. Superb breakfast. This boutique hotel really knows how to look after their guests. 10/10 all the way. Well done Sintra Boutique hotel. I would definitely stay again.
