Monte da Lagoa, hotel in Altura

Surrounded by lush gardens, Monte da Lagoa consists of 8 restored farm houses offering spacious studios and apartments. It is just 5 minutes from Altura’s beach.

The property and site were just phenomenal - the villas had real authentic and rustic Portugese charm, and you can see how much thought has gone into decorating each of them individually with such lovely and unique details. The view from the rooftop of our villa was stunning, and it was well-equipped with everything that we needed for our stay. The double bed was highly comfortable, too, and there was plenty of space for storage for us while we were there. Pilar could not have done more for us at all, even down to stocking our fridge so our toddler could eat when we arrived after a late flight. She is a truly exceptional host! The villa complex is a great distance from the local town and beach, and we were happy to stay local and walk everywhere as we wanted a relaxing family holiday to recharge our batteries. If you wanted to go further afield, renting a car or bicycles would be more beneficial, but Pilar even had recommendations for those, too! The plunge pool has incredible views of the sea, and is in really good condition with some chairs, loungers and cushions around it too. There was also a barbecue, launderette and airers available free of charge so that we could do emergency washing and drying (so, so helpful with a toddler in tow!). Thank you so much, again, for such an incredible stay. We will most definitely be back!!

Altura is a quiet little town on the eastern edge of the Algarve, very close to the Spanish border. The beach runs for miles in both directions and affords stunning walks especially at low tide. For most of the year, this area is peaceful and certainly not overrun with tourism as is the case with many places further west. The boardwalks across the sand dunes are wonderful, and lit by tiny low-level lighting at night. If you like beauty, simplicity and calm, then Altura is a safe bet!

We normally stay in Altura in January and have done many times, this was our first visit in February and although still very quiet, nothing open, no shops, one supermarket, no entertainment that we saw in or out of the hotel, there was the odd coffee shop open if you were lucky, but there was definably more people around. If you are like us and dont want to see or speak to anyone for a week or want a complete break to rest up then Altura is the go to place. There are a few places close enough to get a taxi too if you find it to quiet or boring. We stayed in the only hotel which is lovely but could do with a bit of a face lift, having said that if its your first visit you wouldn't know any difference, we have stayed there several times so did notice slight changes, having said that there was building work going on so maybe next time we will see big changes.

As a winter destination, Altura suits the quiet traveller.

As a winter destination, Altura suits the quiet traveller. There are numerous restaurants and cafes in the village, as well as several supermarkets. There is a tourist bus service although we haven’t used it. One major hotel and many rentable properties serve the holiday visitors. Its location in the eastern Algarve, between Tavira and the Spanish border, means there is some variety for explorers.

Visit Chaminé restaurant was great, food is fanstastic and staff is super nice. Great value for money. Restaurant Carocho is just amazing for small snacks during the day. Typical and great staff. Altura is quiet, calm and has plenty of small street shops. The village is ideal for some relaxing holidays. Very close to the main town Vila Real de Santo António. A brand new pathway by the sea is being built that links the area around, breathtaking.

Monte de Lagoa consists of a group of charming rustic farm buildings that have been renovated to a very high standard. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, beautifully decorated and full of character. They are in a lovely location, just a short walk to the beach, Altura centre and several restaurants. It was very nice being able to sit outside on our terrace and see the sea. Pilar was an exceptionally charming and helpful host and went out of her way to make us feel at home. Very dog friendly, with a nice field to walk around.

The house was great. Exactly as described, super clean and had everything you can possibly need. The location is great, just 5 minutes walk to the local beach and local restaurants, and also within a short drive away of other villages and beaches if you wish to go somewhere else. The host was very helpful and responded to everything very quickly, and he was also very flexible with check-in and check-out times. Will stay again if/when I return to Altura.

It was a disaster, we tried to book in at 3pm and were told that we were at the wrong place and were sent away, after walking around Altura for 7 hours and asking everyone we could find. At 10.30pm had a call back from the owner of the apartment who said that we were originally at the correct address and that the reception person had made a mistake. Apparently Altura Sunshine is not known to this staff member.
