We spent 3 days and 4 nights here. Day 1 was the local ruins and town tour, day 2 was Machu Picchu and day 3 was fun and rest. You could eliminate day 3 but we really enjoyed a leisurely, restful day. Walked through the town and explored the local flavor. Enjoyed craft cocktails at El Alburgue and had a lovely time overall.

Probably you are headed to Machu Picchu, but do not bypass Ollantaytambo! Several archeological sites, large market, cobblestone and brick streets, charming plaza, Casa de Cuy. Lots of drivers. One took us all the way to Cusco airport by way of Chinchero, waiting for us for an hour in Chinchero while we visited the weaving and dyeing center.

Incredibly charming and historic town!
Incredibly charming and historic town! I recommend to stay at least a full day and night to explore the ruins and walk around the narrow pedestrian cobblestone streets. Also, the markets right outside of the ruins had some of the best souvenirs at the best prices we found throughout our entire 2 weeks in Peru.

The Ollantaytambo ruins exceeded my expectations.
The Ollantaytambo ruins exceeded my expectations. Our guide Ernesto did an excellent job of showing us details of the architecture and history that we would have completely missed without him. There is some high quality Inca architecture there with impressively large stones and the site is not overwhelming. Nice hike and view at Pinkaylluna. Hiked from Pichingoto up to Maras pueblo through the salt mines and then taxied to Moray. Beautiful and good for acclimatization.

Ollantaytambo is more thanjust a jumping point to visit Machu Picchu. It was the theRoyal city of the Inca Empire. From the megalithic red granite Sun Temple, the face of Viracocha, tthe ancient gridded streets, or a hike to Pumamarka or Naupa Iglesia, there is something for everyone.

Ollantaytambo is a piece of Peru to be enjoyed at leisure.
Ollantaytambo is a piece of Peru to be enjoyed at leisure. It’s a beautiful place with a stunning backdrop of mountain ranges and Incan ruins. The town itself seems to have held out to its Incan roots with homes and shops still on the foundations of their Incan forefathers. Take a meander through the streets and soak up the lovely tranquil atmosphere, or sit in the square and grab a bite or a drink. We would love to have been there longer to explore the surrounding areas and recharge our batteries. Aside from Machu Picchu, we found this one of the most spiritual locations in Peru, simply because of the pace of life and strong connection to the locals. There’s also much less hard sales here than other tourist hot spots.
There are three Incan ruins nearby to explore, though some climbs are not for the faint hearted or suitable for children - we tried one and thought better of it, choosing to do the main ruins.
We stayed overnight on our way back from Aguas Calientes and found it easy by train. There isn’t a train or tourist bus service out so we opted for a shared taxi back to Cusco. The service was reliable, faster than our Peru Rail biomodal service connection and was much cheaper. Ask at the Tourist desk in the square for help. The chap there was super helpful. Don’t miss this utter gem in Peru.

The hotel is perfectly located in a quiet street, 3min from the center.
you can reach everything in no time. the place is quiet, clean and surprisingly not cold! The rooms are really nice and the people are incredible. They helped me with all my questions and gave me superb advice for hiking in the surrounding mountains.
Not to mention, that the breakfast is outstandingly good!
This so far has been the best stay on my journey in Peru!!
So if you want to stay some days in Ollantaytambo.. this is the place!
Hotel location is pretty close to everywhere, close to Peru Rail/Inka Rail station and Ollantaytambo Fortress, also to Plaza de Armas,. You can do all in walking distance.
Bedroom is nice and clean, facing Ollantaytambo river and fortress. Beds are comfortable and shower with hot water and high pressure.
Mr.Derek is very nice, provided us many information of what we needed to know, also helping us to enter Ollantaytambo when we came back from Machu Picchu. Thanks Mr.Derek...
The hotel was in the quiet San Isdro part of Ollantaytambo, 5-10 mins walk from the main area. Josie who ran the b&b was very friendly and her English was great. Our twin room was a little rustic but clean, with comfy beds and had the best hot shower we'd had so far in Peru. Breakfast was simple but tasty and you could spend a few sol more for an omelette. The lounge area also had hot water for tea available throughout the day.
This was a great quiet retreat in the beautiful Ollantaytambo at the far edge of town. It was still only a 10 min walk to the center and 20 to the train station. Nicola and Antonio were incredible hosts who gave great recommendations, always helped out and even held our bags while we went to Aguas Calientes for two nights before coming back! The rooms were spacious and the beds so comfortable!
The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The entire resort is lovely - we visited the organic farm, and had a tour of the coffee roaster and distillery - an informative and fun experience. The hotel is located within the train station - which means the train arrives literally at your doorstep.
