Tongariro Lodge, hotel in Tongariro

Tongariro Lodge is located in 22 acres of secluded grounds, surrounded by a beautiful garden landscape and along the banks of Tongariro River.

We were really happy with Tongariro Lodge. The staff were friendly, informative and personable. We had reserved a villa and were blown away to discover it had two bedrooms (queen beds), each with its own bathroom, a big living/dining/kitchen space, lots of closets and our own carport -- it was really a separate small house. I can see that this would be a great place for angling enthusiasts (Tongariro is very much fishing-themed)! The breakfast is ordered the day before using a form and is served in the Angler's Den, while you can reserve a table for dinner in the Lodge dining room. We dined in the dining room on our first night and were very pleased. The second night, we had made reservations in advance at the Hare and Copper, only 3 minutes' drive away, and that was exceptionally good, one of our best meals in New Zealand. Breakfast was served by a cheerful young woman who offered good touring advice (as did the check-in staff). The Lodge is in an ideal location for anglers (the Tongariro River runs through the property) and anyone else drawn to the Tongariro National Park. Despite not so clement weather, we managed 2 good walks (not hikes, we're older, but there are plenty of those available) and visits to the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre (very much worthwhile) and the Tongariro National Trout Centre (highly recommended, particularly good for families, you can feed the trout in the outdoor stream and there's even a kids' fishing pool!). All in all, a great stay.

River Birches, hotel in Tongariro

The award-winning River Birches offers secluded, comfort and understated luxury accommodations, set within peaceful gardens on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Beautiful stay with the most gracious hosts. Jason was so helpful as we navigated the area and prepared to hike the Tongariro Crossing. The room was beautiful, quiet, clean, and comfy. The wooden spa in the beautiful garden offered the perfect relief after our epic hike. Great breakfasts and conversation with our hosts. They just couldn't do more for us! Sadly, we were not able to take advantage of the world-famous fishing, but hope to get back to the area one day.

We walked round the mountain track anti-clockwise.

We walked round the mountain track anti-clockwise. Overall walk was a little harder than I had expected, though got progressively easier each day. Distances can be misleading as track harder and slower day one vs day four or five. Times on DOC maps reasonable guide to relative effort for each section. I loved the back section between Mangaehuehu, Rangipo and Waihohonu huts.

I did the Tongariro Northern Circuit.

I did the Tongariro Northern Circuit. I got the northern explorer from Auckland and then walked from Whakapapa to Mangatepopo hut on that first day. The whole experience was A=mazing. Met some Wonderful people. So four days on the trail and then two nights at Skotel which was great. The food at Skotel was excellent as was the staff. Another highlight was the gondalier up to the restaurant on Mt Ruapehu. Have to ruin it by saying the service at Tongariro chateau"s cafe was dismal, not at all what you would expect. Got the bus back to Auckland, next time I would get the train back again.
