Lochmara Lodge - 20mins by boat from Picton, hotel in Portage

Conveniently accessible by water taxi from Picton, Lochmara Lodge - 20mins by boat from Picton offers exclusive accommodations surrounded by native bush and the beach.

We loved everything about our stay at Lochmara Lodge. We stayed for two nights with our family and It was a little bit of a splurge, but did not disappoint! The location was stunning, the fact that you got there by water taxi made it remote and uncrowded, and there were plenty of things to do (hike, paddleboard, kayak). Also, the food was delicious and the staff was accommodating and helpful.

Te Mahia Bay Resort, hotel in Portage

Te Mahia Bay Resort offers accommodations in Kenepuru Sounds. The resort has a barbecue and a private beach area. A TV with satellite channels.

Te Mahia is a slice of paradise in the Queen Charlotte-Kennepure Sound. The location is a balm for your soul in the busy life we lead today. It is exquisitely beautiful but the locations beauty is surpassed by Trevor and Janet who were exemplified Kiwi kindness. As Canadian golfers pursuing the links, Trevor arranged for us to join a golf tournament at the Nopera golf course. This required a short boat water ride across the gorgeous sound by equally kind and generous Kiwis Ang and Christopher- who were playing in the tournament. While we scooted across the sound our guides pointed out features around the shore which were not in any guide books. Trevor arranged a delicious dinner for us upon our return which put the fresh in freshly caught. Our chefs were an engaging young couple who prepared a delicious meal. This place is not to be missed in any trip to New Zealand.

The Portage was a lovely place to stay, the views were amazing and the staff extremely helpful. We were dissapointed about only 1 restaurant being open, and therefore not a large selection to choose from. We would recommend asking in advance, if they can make up a sharing platter, as this is not on the menu, and when we asked, they mentioned we should have ordered in advance. The beautiful view from the deck totally lends itself to drinking and grazing on a delicious platter. The kids loved the kayaks and paddle boards. We would recommend booking a transfer and taking a picnic to a secluded beach - we had a wonderful time.

Portage is a fantastic location, with stunning scenery, not too far off the Queen Charlotte Track, also accessible by car for the non-walkers. Restaurant meals at the resort were disappointing, with not many options and inflated prices. Plenty of accommodation options, from camping at Cowshed Bay to staying in the resort. We found a cosy B&B just up the road which suited us perfectly.

We stayed at Portage for a night while walking the Queen Charlotte track. We got upgraded to the Tui room, which had a lovely view of the sound. The bed was very comfy and the room had everything you need for a night stay. We had dinner at the restaurant, which was great and the staff were friendly. We got a lift to the beginning of the track, which saved 700m of uphill walk on the road.

Such a comfortable place to stay in a spectacular location. We stayed as a group of 6, in two rooms. Everyone raved about how well they slept and how comfy the beds were and how beautiful the view from each room was. The staff were exceptional. They went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our stay I would highly recommend The Portage Resort.

After a long walk it was great to arrive at a fantastic location. unfortunately the iconic idea of luxury has been lost on this hotel.
