Waiora la grange cottage, hotel in Otaki

Waiora la grange cottage is a recently renovated guest house in Otaki, where guests can make the most of its garden and barbecue facilities.

Lovely little place far better than a hotel my kids loved it. Wonderful little touches like the compot and dart board! My kids have been waxing lyrical to their grandparents about it today. We really can't recommend this location enough.

It was a great stopover on our way to the capital city. We had already traveled for a number of hours. Mowbrays (the stamp shop) was a must visit for us and if you're into clothes shopping you'll do well. It was disappointing that the Maori church was closed but we viewed the statue of Te Raparaha.

Its best pie shop (Main Street Bakery) closes during the school holidays but the next one (Salut) has some interesting tastes. Great roast lamb can be found at Town and Country Food Otaki. There is also an RSA (Retired Serviceman's Association) out back of town where everyone can get a good meal (evening), some alcohol and gaming entertainment.

Otaki is a quaint place with 2 supermarkets at either end of the town and a selection of eateries/takeaways. It is very easy to find from SH1 and has a beautiful beach that stretches for miles. The area seemed clean and well looked after.

The room was very dated and in need of modernisation although the bathroom appeared to be brand new. The heat pump didn't work and the motel is located next to SH1 so heavy traffic noises all night long.

I was in Otaki to go to a wedding at Te Horo, so I spent only an hour or so in the town. I went to the Saturday market and bought some soap and had a good coffee from a cart. The town's main street on State Highway 1 is known for its outlet shops. I the past I have paid good prices for Icebreaker garments there. Not a bad reason for stopping in Otaki. A pleasant, clean town with attractive beaches nearby and good fruit and vegetable shopping at the market gardens.

My answer to this question would be totally biased as I grew up in the district as a teenager & it felt like returning home after 60 years. Spent time with some of my former school mates reminiscing. Our hosts at Sea Salt Julie & Paul greeted us like long lost friends & were amazing.

Nice and cozy atmosphere with a Balinese touch, lots of privacy, I had no problems reaching it by bus, but there is enough space if you come by car. Very considerate and friendly host, attention to detail, just a nice place in lovely Ōtaki. Also not far from shops, restaurants and supermarket.

We didn't order breakfast. As we were in Otaki for a family re-union we only slept at the Motel.
