The Sands Hotel Hokianga, hotel in Opononi

Overlooking Hokianga Harbour at Omapere, The Sands Hotel Hokianga is a pretty 4-star hotel offering spacious accommodation in a lovely location.

The location was perfect for the most amazing sunsets! Close to the Lookout loop walk overlooking the entrance of the Harbour and a short drive to visit the awe inspiring Tane Mahuta - an absolute must see! The Restaurant food was excellent and we ended up eating there both nights, highly recommended. The staff were all amazing, especially the young local girl waitressing on our first night (so sorry I didn't get your name!)

We loved everything about this property. Amazing views with beautiful gardens. We spent time on the veranda watching the birds and passing rain showers as well as spotting wild pigs on the nearby hills with the provided binoculars. We visited the glow worms which was a treat, and heard the possums in the night. As nature lovers, we thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the property. The kitchen had everything we needed and more, including a fruit bowl with fresh fruit, honey from their bees and a full pantry plus juice, milk and butter. There were even fresh flowers on the dining table that smelt delightful. The rooms and beds were comfortable, a washing machine and dryer is available, there is plenty of space to spread out and a fire place to warm the house in the evenings. Wifi was fast, we enjoyed the tv and many board games and books are available. There is even a folder about things to do during your stay and information about the local geography and fauna. Meeting Candy and Rawiri was also special. We were warmly welcomed onto their property, invited to tour their gardens and enjoy their music room. Candy is kind and full of life, and Rawiri gave us lots of recommendations for our holiday. Thank you so much for the wonderful stay, it has definitely been a highlight of our trip.

A lovely historic villa off the beaten path in the far north with beautiful views of the Hokianga Harbour, close to Wairere Boulders and far from the hustle and bustle. Our hosts, Anthony and his wife were absolutely wonderfully hosts and we throughly enjoyed chatting with them over breakfast. Bed was supremely comfortable!

Great spot, great views of the harbour where ever you stay. Nice restaurants, cafes and bars. Has a great little Four Square for shopping. Nearby is a great drive through the Waipoua Forest, visit the great Kauri tree Tane Mahuta - Tane Mahuta is the guardian of the forest and birds.

It's a handy base to visit other attractions such as the giant kauri and the Koutu Boulders. We were there on a Saturday so the Markey was open. There are harbour cruises and kayaking available and trips to the sand dunes for tobogganing.

I should have booked further on the road.

I should have booked further on the road. This motel is too old and dated and far too cramped among other adjacent rooms for comfort. At $240 /night it was shockingly overpriced. The bathroom was so tiney, you could barely turn around, also the old toilet. The shower had a plastic curtain! ( circa 1970). The place was clean but really too old to be operating espeially at this price. The owner or the operator was pilote and pleasant ( Felicity and Sasha) but really, we were not impressed, in fact VERY disappointed. Cutlery in the drawers was toally unmatched1 Like a scout camp.

Location was great but unfortunately the room was dirty and the pool was closed due to health and safety. The staff were friendly and accommodated as much as they could. It was difficult for them because they could see how dirty things were and they tried their best. It needs an upgrade. It use to be such a beautiful place to stay at.

We did not stay in Opononi but had breakfast at the Thai Landing which was excellent. We booked the Manea footprints of Kupe cultural experience which was informative and professionally presented. Would recommend.

Have stayed here a number of times over the past 8 years.

Have stayed here a number of times over the past 8 years. Since the change of ownership you can really see the decline in service and appearance. Villas cost more now than they ever have yet there are broken toilet roll holders, broken TVs, horrible wifi issues, not enough staff, rooms not being serviced and a kitchen that caught on fire. This place is in need of some serious work and adjustments. Sad to see such a historical place in the Hokianga go down like this.

Due to a mix up by the hotel they did not have enough rooms. We had booked a twin bed room as we were only passing through and did not need more, no problem for them. The hotel gave us a one bedroom apartment with full facilities at the same price without question. Excellent customer relations. Breakfast was described as continental and it was pretty basic but it was help yourself so plenty to start the day off.

Incredible facilities. Hotel-style bathroom (amazing after being used to hostel bathrooms!), and lovely kitchen and common area with TV, books etc. Quiet location. Owners were lovely and the right amount of being involved without intruding on my stay
