Maple Lodge Motel, hotel in Matamata

Surrounded by lovely gardens, Maple Lodge Motel is located in a quiet area of Matamata, just 1km from the town centre. It is a 14-minute drive from Hobbiton and Wairere Falls.

The motel is really conveniently located to do the Hobbiton tour, and is close to a number of other worthwhile tourist locations. Approx 13 minute drive to the Hobbiton movie set meeting point. A very quiet and peaceful area, close to Matamata township. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Some may find it as a basic country motel, but it was clean, quiet and very comfortable.

I really liked the way that the hotel had retained its old world charm and atmosphere. Hadn't given in to tacky touches, but kept to the integrity of the furnishings etc. A very comfortable bed, as well.

The hot pools are cool, in the forest by a roaring river.

The hot pools are cool, in the forest by a roaring river. We stayed in a spa unite, so we sat in a spa pool at night! So much hot water sitting! The natural hot pools aren't very hot though. I like to seek out pools that are about 40, and the hottest was maybe 38 degrees? Still fun to go to, and an adventure. The golf club looks ok, although we don't play golf. The area stinks of cows, but unfortunately that is most of New Zealand, now, and nothing the hotel can control. But it should be a larger issue for this country, and not one that anyone is really addressing. Cows everywhere! Peeeyew!

The hotel matches the photos, so keep your expectations in check. Despite its age, it exudes a certain charm. The bed is comfortable, breakfast is enjoyable, and the highlight is the heated pools. The staff is wonderfully friendly and kind.

The old world charm was what we went there for, but the matching old-school racism against things Māori was unexpected. Deliberately censoring access to Māori TV and Te reo channels on the freeview. The 24 hour access to the hotpools included in the package was lovely as was the continental breakfast. The dinner from the bar and ala carte was nice with good portions. Beds a bit uncomfortable, needs upgrading, not much spring left in them and the ensuite sink drain needs a plumber, would not drain after 3 days and a heap of drano. The staff in the main were lovely until I asked the manager about why no te reo TV channels. Then got a flippant, Ask Winston, he doesn't encourage Māori, and something muttered about co-governance. This spoiled what would have been a lovely 30 year relationship celebration for us. I would have rated it 7/10, but only give it a 5/10 for the lovely staff and hot pools

We had visited Hobbiton for the Halfling Marathon and this was a great nearby location to go and relax afterwards, especially with the lovely hot springs to soak in . It's a beautiful heritage building, very clean and welcoming staff. The continental breakfast was perfect and the beds were comfortable. Rooms were clean and perfect for a short stay.
