We love that all the hotels, restaurants, cafes and activities are all within walking distance. All the staff that we have met for our helicopter ride and hike were excellent and so friendly! It is a very relaxing place yet fun to be having a holiday at Franz Josef. But I do wish you could review the restaurant pricing as they are very steep. With all the holidaymakers in the area, all need to eat and drink so no need to charge so high...i think you will invite more tourists to the area if prices of food are less expensive.

We stayed there because I am a keen bird photographer and I wanted to visit the Whataroa bird sanctuary. We initially only booked 3 nights but there is so much to do around there we extended it to 5. while there we went to lake Matherson, Fox Glacier, a beautiful bush walk especially down the moraine track, Franz Joseph Glacier not visible due to mist and Okarito which has a beautiful coast and large lagoon but unfortunately the weather was not great so next time.

Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

I wish I could give 6 or 7 stars if possible! We had an amazing stay. The house is beautiful, spacious, and comfortable, with a large living and dining area. The kitchen is super well-equipped. In addition to air conditioning, the wood fireplace and electric blankets on each bed kept us very warm during the cold days. The location is quiet yet conveniently close to Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. We would definitely love to come back!
I choose Rainforest retreat again as I had a very good stayed years ago and this time wasn’t different. The room was impecable,’it has everything you need, very comfortable and warm. The spa pool is a little bit old but it’s all you need to relax after a day of hiking. Very nice restaurant and location. good price! 100% recommended
