Matagalpa may be one of Nicaragua's small cities, but it remains a fairly provincial and a nice place for good. If you are a coffee lover, that is a place to go and enjoy ground coffee all day long with traditional corn pastries, hot or cold beverages or main dishes. Here the nearby mountains around the city's central neighborhoods, are close from locals' minds, not to mention the country side.

The hike to the cross was amazing.

The hike to the cross was amazing. Best trail markers I have EVER seen! Mostly clean and shaded trail. The restaurants are really good on the other side of town by the WHITE church (not the pink one). People are friendly and more speak English here than you find in the south. I highly recommend the cafe next to the white church.

I liked that Matagalpa was in the mountains, and easily accessible by bus from Managua. I stayed for 2 days and would've stayed another day or two to do some more hiking, especially to the top of the mountain with the cross on it. I loved the local bakeries, restaurants, market, and mountainous views. It was a relaxing and peaceful stay.

One of the best stays I’ve had in Nicaragua. The family is so lovely. The room is nice and clean, they help you with organizing hikes, inform you about good restaurants and taking busses. The food she cooks is amazing, never skip the breakfast T the homestay! I 100% recommend this stay. There is also a great BBQ restaurant 2 blocks away, definitely worth a visit. Support the locals, forget about big hotel companies!

The staff were amazing and very helpful. If I come back to Matagalpa I will definitely go back to Hotel San José!! Thank you for an amazing stay.
