Wanted to do some reasonably priced ecotourism, and Coatepec...
Wanted to do some reasonably priced ecotourism, and Coatepec offers that. My contact was Sr Kashmir Wolf at Pronatura, which is the NGO headquartered in Coatepec, Veracruz state. It worked out very well. He is bilingual español/ingles.
Although the US State Department lists Veracruz state as being relatively safe within MX (as of feb 2020), I'd exercise extra caution in this region. There was a paramilitary police presence here which I didn't see in either Puebla or México City. Doing any hiking in the countryside, I'd definitely consider having a trusted local present, at least for now. IMO, it was worth it, got to see some nice, green forest land and wonderful birds, including colibrí

This is a beautiful colonial style hotel in the heart of Coatepec. What is remarkable is the property is very large and very green, there are lovely gardens, a pool and open air areas. The hotel is full of beautiful antiques and art which makes it feel like going back in time, and was a unique experience. The water pressure is very strong and hot in the shower, the rooms are large and comfortable. The staff is professional and they have a small pool! All in all a great place, and a great value.
We had one of the family rooms - a maisonette apartment for 5 people. We were four, which was perfect. The style of the hotel and the furnishing of the rooms is very creative and arty. The bathroom and shower were nice, everything was very clean.
The hotel is located conveniently at the edge of the town but in walking distance of the center. If you are noise-sensitive or want to leave your windows open while you sleep, you might want to ask for a room facing the patio.
It is a very nice hotel with unique decoration. We were 3 adults and 2 children and the room was perfectly fine for us.
We had breakfast included which was more than enough for us to start the day.
We will definitely come back!
Very comfortable hotel.Room was great.Where you had breakfast was lovely.Overall very good indeed!Roberto the owner was very helpful recommending we visited Xico and Casada de Texolo. Both were fantastic!
