Two days are enough to experience the beautiful lake by this small town. We took a boat trip at the lake and a nice trip to the Gulf of Mexico. We got there from San Jose Tuxtla by a taxi for price of 25 mxp/person.

We are touring with a hire car and a flexible agenda so cut our trip to catemaco short by a day because we found the town to be dilapidated - very run down an dirty. Actually it was our first disappointment in 3 weeks of touring in Mexico. The one way system was a nightmare to negotiate because random streets were blocked off with rocks and rubble.
The lake boat trip we wanted to take we moved from the Catemaco lake to the Reserva Ecológica Manglares del Toztlan and had a wonderful tour of the mangroves about 15km north of Catemaco. We saw ibises, iguanas, turtles, pelicans and it was idyllic with a super friendly and helpful boatman.

I stayed for 3 nights.
I stayed for 3 nights. Changed hotel, because the room I stayed wasn't available. The lake is nice to look at. I took the lancha tour, a bit disappointed. I went to see the Eyipantla Falls, which I highly recommend. Fairly easy to get to via bus or colectivo taxi.
Christmas lights are on in the town, and there's a small skating ring operating in the evening.

Catemaco is a destination for Mexican and other Spanish...
Catemaco is a destination for Mexican and other Spanish speaking tourists. There are very few English-speaking tourists and thus it might be difficult to navigate without some basic Spanish language skills. Points of interest are mostly natural- lakes, secluded beaches, mangroves, waterfalls. Taxis and boats are inexpensive and can take you to any of the points of interest. The beaches on the lake in town are probably not good for swimming, but beaches further out and on the ocean like Barra de Sontecampan are quiet, secluded and clean. Great waterfalls.

The host is very nice and was very communicative before I arrived. Upon my arrival I was upgraded to a private room, because mould had developed in the dorm. I was happy to accept the upgrade.
The host also invited me to an event she was organising at her home/other hotel the following evening, which i did attend and it was really nice.
