Kazakhstan
I stayed in Semey during a heatwave and my friends who previously stayed here for a conference said none of their rooms had AC, so I was pleasantly surprised when my bedroom had AC. I guess some rooms do whereas others don’t. There was hot water and clean towels. Receptionist was very friendly but nobody speaks English. Since I booked through Booking.com my breakfast was included, it was decent but nothing amazing or filling. Good location, nearby to the park and great cafes/restaurants. I was able to check out exactly 24 hours after I checked in, I was under the impression that there is no strict check out time.

For those who are interested in literature, the city should offer some value. It has museums dedicated to both Dostoevsky and Abai. They both lived there for a while. There is some Soviet heritage, but it is getting harder and harder to find them. The anatomical museum is currently undergoing renovations, and the alley of Lenins is no more, presumably as they too are under renovations. The big statue of Lenin still stands though, which is a nice little addition to say the least. Food situation is a bit dire, for those who do not eat meat, but you will not starve.
