Cambodia has successfully dusted itself off from the ravages of war with its colourful capital of Phnom Penh rising from the ashes and sparkling once more. This fascinating city, on the banks of the Mekong River, features exotic markets, cultural jewels and is home to some of the friendliest people on earth.
A visit to the National Museum captures a slice of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer history and art. A different and more recent history suffocates and overwhelms visitors to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former prison of the Khmer Rouge, and The Killing Fields are a short drive from the capital.
The Royal Palace is a striking centrepiece in the centre of Phnom Penh, and is home to the Emerald Buddha and Silver Pagoda. Not far away is the Cambodian Independence Monument that celebrates Cambodia’s sovereignty.
You can satisfy your hunger pains with delicious French-Indochina-inspired meals at various street stalls or classy restaurants. The riverside area has the Art Deco Central Market for a great bargain and there are a variety of bars, especially near Sisowath Quay.
Take time to walk around the French colonial streets with its mix of slow-moving monks and speedy motorbikes. Booking.com has many hotels located in Daun Penh and Chamkar Mon districts, amongst others.
There’s lots to see. Unfortunately a lot of it covers a bad period for the country. The prison S21 is certainly worth a visit. There are plenty of temples to visit. It’s a country trying to recover and show visitors it has more to offer.

Phnom Penh was a great intro into Cambodia, however I think I probably stayed one day too long (I think 3 days would have been best). The history in the city is so varied and it has a great vibrant atmosphere that is infectious! Although difficult, I would recommend going to the genocide museum and killing fields. I would then go to the palace and national museum to see another side of the country’s history. Kravanh restaurant is a must try (more expensive than most places in the city) purely because the ancient recipes of the country were shared by the Queen to the head chef - the food is exquisite and allows for a more authentic take on the recipes.

Unfortunately, my experience in Phnom Penh was disappointing...
Unfortunately, my experience in Phnom Penh was disappointing. The city felt chaotic, with relentless traffic and few pedestrian-friendly areas, making it hard to explore comfortably. Getting around was challenging, as most tuk-tuk drivers insisted on high prices and often quoted fares in U.S. dollars rather than the local currency, which felt like a constant negotiation and added to the expenses. In fact, many places, from shops to restaurants, seemed to prefer USD, and I rarely got a fair exchange rate, which made even basic transactions feel costly.
Cleanliness was another issue—areas around the markets and some public spaces were untidy, with noticeable litter on the streets that detracted from the city’s appeal. The attractions, like the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom, were interesting but didn’t meet my expectations in terms of upkeep, and they were crowded, making it hard to fully appreciate them.
Additionally, I didn’t feel very welcomed as a tourist. Some locals seemed indifferent or even unfriendly, and safety became a concern, especially in the evenings on dimly lit streets. Although I managed to find a few highlights, Phnom Penh ultimately didn’t provide the warmth or excitement I’d hoped for. It may be better suited for travellers comfortable with a very rustic, raw experience, but sadly, it wasn’t for me.

The whole experience was good.
The whole experience was good. It was safe and the people were very friendly. But what really makes Phonm Penh a great travel destination is the price of food and hotel. I found the price very reasonable - very affordable.
The city has good attractions for tourists, but I’d say 3 days is good enough to see all.

Arriving in Phnom Penh on October 1st, the first impression was disappointing, with a vibe that felt uninviting and a misty, dimly lit city that grew quiet by 8 pm. Decided to cut the stay short and booked a flight back to Malaysia for October 3rd.

Nice touristic place with cheap possibilities to visit...
Nice touristic place with cheap possibilities to visit Angkor Wat. Impressive Genocide Museum etc. Be careful with tuk tuk drivers at Royal Palace who sell you a historical city tour for 45.000 riel (around 11 usd) Later they say it is 45 dollar! In the end I paid 25 usd but the tour was not completed. Ok with me: had enough already!
For visitors: plenty of tuk tuks. Most of them charge 3 USD but some just 1 usd for the same ride! I usually paid 10.000 riel (2,5 usd) because everybody needs to make some money!

We stayed overnight here because of its convenient location to the airport. We had free transfer from and back to the airport, making life easy for a family of four. The hotel was amazing - with a well-equipped gym, stunning pool, and the best breakfast we experienced in Cambodia with an incredible array of food. My teenagers rated the breakfast and gym 10 out of 10. The rooms were very comfortable. I only wished we stayed more than one night. And a special shout out to Kakada who made our farewell from Cambodia so special. A true gentleman.
Very nice hotel with large and comfortable bedrooms, exceptionally clean. The pool is great and the cocktails are too! Food and breakfast was all fresh and good quality.
Very attentive staff, they forwarded my tablet that I'd left in the safe to another hotel in Siem Reap for me and kept me updated via WhatsApp.
I travelled for 3 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia and while the other hotels were all nice, this was the best one of the whole trip in terms of facilities. I would definitely return!
Good position in front of the National Museum and the Royal Palace. Close to downtown and many restaurants and bars. The rooftop bar of the hotel was very nice in the evening. The breakfast on the 15th floor had quite the view on the city, and the Cambodian carved wood furniture added some charme.
Great location with a fantastic rooftop bar. Very friendly staff and good food. Our room was great, very spacious and the best shower in any of the hotels we've stayed in on our trip through Vietnam and Cambodia. Highly recommend this hotel!
Beautiful hotel. A hidden gem in the city centre. Pool area is like a tropical paradise.Had breakfast on the terrace of the old Colonial French building. staff service was superb.
