Yamagata is a beautiful city. It was also our base for visiting other places. We went to Yamadera, Ginza Onsen and Zao Onsen by train and bus, from the Yamagata station. Had Ramen, which was reasonable in value

The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic.
The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic. It wasnt crowded, lessons for kids and adults were AUD$55 for 4 hours, lifts were @4$ per lift. Gear hire was AUD$65 for 2 days PP. In Australia lift passes are $250 per day alone. The hotel Sailor Hutte was literally at the base of the ski lifts. Food was cheap ($10-14 per meal) booze was cheap ($3.50 for a beer). The guys at the Hotel Sailor Hutte were great, make an effort to chat with them via your translator app. Its worth it. One more thing, I would recommend buying Shinkansen tickets directly from JR East rail online. Heaps cheaper than buying a seven day pass unless you are planning to spend 7 days on the train. FYI there are 3 Shinkansen companies East, Central and West. They have there own websites a bit clunky in English but it works. Good luck.

Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture.
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture. There are many places to visit and things to do. We rented a car and I believe this is a must if you want to sight see and time is an issue for you. By car from Yamagata train station, Zao Onsen is about 40-50 minutes away, Ginzan Onsen an hour, Yamadera about 20-30 mins. If you are into photography, there are many great landscape photos you can take here.

Not very famous place for travelingas not much to see in the city.
If you could have a car or rent one, could go more places.
Basically in Yamagata prefecture, public transportation doesn't cover much as it is not a prefecture mainly for sightseeing though there are several nice places to go.

The hospitality was amazing and all staff members where super helpful and friendly, despite us not knowing Japanese super well but the staff always did well to communicate with us, the cafe was super cute and had some really delicious food.
The room we stayed in was quite spacious and super comfortable even had a beautiful view from the window every morning!
It was also in walking distant to some nice onsens, foot baths and other delicious restaurants! Definitely recommend if you're wanting to stay there in the colder months.
We have travelled widely for 45 yrs and stayed in some of the best and worst hotels. From the least expensive to the expensive. The Metropolitan Yamagata is one of the best and one of the most affordable. Everything one would normally require of a most comfortable and happy stay, you will find here. For the price you pay, you can’t get this standard anywhere else in the world. Highly recommend!
Great location right beside the station, there's even a covered walkway straight to the building.
The view is fantastic, I think this is the tallest building in Yamagata and the hotel is located at the top. There's also a Family Mart and a cinema in the building
the place was lovely, but most of all the staff was amazing, friendly and helpful.
also i ate diner there (you pay by donation) which was the best meal i had in japan, with so many different dishes.
would definitely come back when im japan!
Very nice hotel, good rooms. Staff extremely kind and helpful, with possibility to find someone in the team speaking english. Possibility to find food for western breakfast, not only japanese style.
