Kuju Kogen Cottage, hotel in Taketa

Boasting an open-air hot spring bath looking out to the Kuju nature, Kuju Kogen Cottage offers cozy accommodations located in the beautiful plateau.

Food was great as we requested for Wagyu beef BBQ for dinner at extra costs. Buffer breakfast had a considerable good spread but they closed very punctually at 10am. The onsen was great with view of Aso Alps if you visit before dark or early in the morning before they close for cleaning. The hotel staff were attentive as they noticed that we forgot to turn off headlights of our car after checking in and called us by the room phone to alert us! Although we stayed at the farthest block away from the main block, we were able to park our car near our block and only dragged our luggage for a short distance! We arrived after dark due to the distance of the place and was texting the hotel to inform them that we will be late for dinner. They were kind to respond and guided us to dinner first before going to the room.

Lodge Kiyokawa, hotel in Taketa

Offering river views, Lodge Kiyokawa in Bungoono has accommodations, a garden, a terrace and a restaurant. Complimentary WiFi is available.

This place truly felt like a dream, with a tranquil river, waterfall, luscious greenery and the faint hum of animals and nature. Our stay in the air conditioned treehouse was exceptional, with futons that, while firmer, offered a uniquely comfortable rest. The seclusion of the spot made it feel like a private slice of paradise. The river and waterfall were so serene that I could spend hours simply relaxing on their sun loungers by the edge. There is also a cafe across the river that is run by a wife and husband duo that is only accessible by walking or driving on a path through a scenic rice paddy. It had sushi, pizza, noodles and more that was delicious and worth trying! The lodge also offers a range of riverside activites such as saunas, bike riding, a fire-pit for evening relaxation, and water rafting. The rafting and the peaceful moments floating in the river were core memories from my stay and a must try!

El Patio Ranch, hotel in Taketa

Located amid nature at the base of Mount Aso, El Patio Ranch offers a retreat in a Western American theme, with horse-back riding, a Western goods shop and American barbecue.

The location is fantastic. The availability of horseback riding throughout the valley was the primary reason for our selection of El Patio. The horseback riding experience was terrific. The room was large, modern, clean and very comfortable and with a nice "Western" theme style. The personnel were all very friendly and helpful.

Offering mountain views, Oita Kuoritei in Kokonoe features accommodations, an open-air bath, and a garden. This ryokan provides free private parking and full-day security.

The room was spacious, the private bath was fantastic, and the food was excellent. More importantly, the staff could not have been more patient and kind despite our extremely limited Japanese language skills.

We used Taketa as a base for day hikes so didn’t explore the town much. The main town is compact and quaint with narrow little streets and a bit of a sleepy feel. To be fair, this was a Monday evening and not much was happening. Had one of the best meals in Japan there at a little French fusion restaurant called Champi (a break from Japanese). Amazing food (5-6 little courses), lovely owner/chef and very reasonable cost. Also plenty of wine options. Also used the public onsen - well maintained and old-school. I recommend it.
